IDSS News June 2024

It is my great pleasure to share that Fotini Christia has been named the next director of IDSS. Fotini has already contributed so much to the success of IDSS through her leadership of SES, SSRC, and the Initiative on Combatting Systemic Racism. Her sharp perspective at the intersection of data, computing, and the social sciences, as well as her knack for bringing others together across disciplines, will no doubt bring her success in the role. I look forward to seeing how the next chapter of IDSS unfolds with her at the helm.

That makes this my last message as Interim Director of IDSS, but thanks to the academic schedule I get to go out on a high note: by congratulating the many students who graduated from IDSS programs this year! We spotlight some of our students below, including recent TPP alum Ben Lewis, this year's MIT Collier Medal winner.

I am grateful for the trust placed in me to steer IDSS through a transitional year, and I look forward to continuing to be part of the IDSS faculty, and working with IDSS students, in the years to come.

Noelle Selin, Interim Director, IDSS

Professor, IDSS and Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS)

IDSS Podcast: Data Nation

New episode: Driving technology change

JT_photoNEW-1 image

Why are they using more electric cars in Norway than in the US? What are the underlying mechanisms that drive technological change, and how can we influence them? What is ‘soft technology’ and what role can it play in lowering carbon emissions? In the season 2 finale of Data Nation, IDSS professor Jessika Trancik explains how her lab attempts to measure and model a technology’s real or potential impact, beneficial or harmful, on people, the environment, society — and on critical outcomes like mitigating climate change.
