Thursday, May 11, 2023 - The Complexity of Mother's Day
Dear Friends in Christ,

This week we celebrate the 6th Sunday of Easter. It also happens to be Mother's Day.
The longer I travel the road of ordained ministry, the more aware I am of how complicated this holiday is, and how for many people there is more grief than joy. I especially think of people whose mothers have died in the past year; people who are estranged from their mother; women who have always wanted to be a mother, but are not; mothers who have lost a child (and the list could go on).

The day also highlights the ways our culture can overly sentimentalize motherhood. We honor you moms with pink flowers and boxed candy. But if you are poor and without a certain kind of job, we do not honor you with maternity leave, even though more research comes out every year about the uniquely powerful downstream effects of that early bonding.

At Christ Church, we try to acknowledge the complexity in the holiday including the joy that many feel. But we don't make mothers stand up for applause and we take a pass on carnations. We will offer the prayer below in the midst of the service, and I will touch on motherhood in my sermon.
I look forward to celebrating Easter resurrection
in all its complexity with you soon!
Seth+

  • Living God, on this day we give special thanks for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms. We pray for all the mothers among us today; for our own mothers, those living and those who have passed away; for the mothers who loved us and for those who fell short of loving us fully; for all who hope to be mothers someday and for those whose hope to have children has been frustrated; for all mothers who have lost children; for all women and men who have mothered in any way - those who have been our substitute mothers and we who have done so for those in need. With all the saints in heaven and on earth, we praise you, Holy God, who gathers us together as a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wings. Amen.

Christ Church Legacy:
Who was on the Land Before Us?

What is the history of Christ Church’s land? This forum describes the earliest hunter-gatherers
who came to southeast Wisconsin at the end of the ice age to chase wooly mammoths and later build effigy mounds. We will describe who they were, what their lives were like, and how different Native Americans occupied this land. Life changed with the French fur traders and the flood of immigrants from Europe. The Native Americans ceded their lands in the treaties of 1829 and 1832 and the earliest plats of land in Whitefish Bay were surveyed and sold in 1835 for farming and settlement.

The presenters are in photo above: left to right Bob Newby, Donna Recht, Katharyn Kominiarek, Ilka Pollack, and Judy Wimmer.
They are longtime docents at the Milwaukee Public Museum specializing in Native American tours for children and adults.
After the service on May 21st

This presentation will be held in the Great Hall and livestreamed.

WHERE has the CHOIR DISAPPEARED to?

If you have been wondering why the choir is shrinking, it’s time to consider joining.
We have lost members to moves, illness and other commitments. Our tenor section will be diminished to a single tenor come this fall!

The common excuses for not joining:
  • "I’m not good enough" - Don’t be silly, if you sang in high school, you are good enough!
  • "I have kids" - Getting out of the house on Wednesday evening will be good for you.
  • "It’s too big of a commitment" - Every member is absent sometimes; you can make it as often as you can. Choir also does not meet in the summer.
Why not consider joining next fall, usually the first Wednesday after Labor Day.
Choir meets 7pm-8:30.
Also the Bell choir, which meets prior to regular choir 5:45-6:45, could use a few extra players. No prior experience required. REALLY!
Questions: Please feel free to call me (or any choir member) or stop me at church with questions. (I’ll be gone April 30 and May 7: you see we can go on vacation!) Of course you can also speak with Scott Riedel regarding Choir and Karol Rehm regarding Bells.
Thanks for your consideration: Maureen McCabe 414-254-6483
Thank you for donating!
Thank you to all that donated to the Mothers Day Food Drive.
3 car loads of food were delivered to All Peoples Church on Monday. Also thank you to Kathy Stanford, Chip Kubly and Steve Schley for helping with collection!!!  The red wagon is always in the Good Shepherd Room for donations of food and Sendiks red bags!

Handing Down the Faith Sundays
are designed to encourage deeper understanding of and more engagement with the liturgy for children. The clergy will offer brief explanations and invite chlldren to participate and observe in specific ways. All children of any age and ability are welcome to participate as they feel comfortable
