From Fr. Mike Gabriel

Transitions has become a very familiar word in the Catholic Church; St. Gertrude’s is well-versed in this word. St. Gertrude’s will soon be in transition saying goodbye to a few.

Fr. Paul Àdajà, who has been with us a little less than a year, will be leaving St. Gertrude to assist at another parish.

Fr. Jim Flaherty S. J., who has been with us over two years, will leave May 19th to become the Director of the Jesuit retreat house in Oshkosh Wisconsin.

Fr Pius, who has been a student these last three years, will be graduating mid-May and then moving on.

Fr. Bill Creed S. J., an icon and beloved, will move sometime later this summer to the Bellarmine Retreat House in Barrington.

Richard Joubert S.J., a Jesuit Scholastic who has been here the last two years, will be continuing his formation program.

Each of these men will be greatly missed. We are most grateful for all that they have done to help St. Gertrude’s. As we say goodbye to all of them, please keep them in your prayers.

Workshop Planned for Sunday, April 14: Informed, Engaged, and Committed: Being a Catholic Multi-Issue Voter

On Sunday, April 14, join trainers from NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice and justice-seekers from around the Chicago area for a workshop.

The workshop will take a deeper look at how Catholic social teaching and tradition provide us with a framework for living responsibly and building a just society. It will explore the many issues that we're invited to consider as we head into election season.

Workshop participants will then begin to explore and practice concrete tools to help have respectful conversations about hard topics and practice sharing about a vision of multi-racial inclusive society where all have what they need to thrive - no exceptions.

Lunch is provided between 12:00-12:30 pm, and the workshop will be held from 12:30-2:30 pm in the Social Hall.

There is a suggested donation of $15. Please do not let cost prevent you from attending this workshop. Register at https://www.mobilize.us/network/event/613472/.

Growing in Faith

I always feel Jesus is chuckling in these early Resurrection stories, messing with the apostles just a bit - by not merely appearing to the apostles and disciples, but eating with them. No Marley’s Ghost – here is Jesus, a flesh and blood living being, breaking bread, having some baked fish. I imagine a bemused expression on his face as he sees the startled reactions of his friends. And pass the salt please.

While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?" Like a good Jewish mother.

But really now…if you were newly risen from the dead, would eating be the first thing you’d want to do? Why is the detail of food mentioned in so many of these stories? Yet...that IS consistent with all of Jesus’ prior ministry, which centers so often around table fellowship, leading up to that last sacred meal with his beloved.

What is the lesson he is still trying to teach us, thru his example, breaking bread? Now my mind goes to “things that have happened here in these days” -- our days — our current conversation as the world witnesses food being used as a weapon of war, people being brought to the brink of famine by the intentional withholding of humanitarian aid. “He took it and ate it in front of them…Then he opened their minds” scripture tells us today. With the disciples, we might ask, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked?”
