New to the One Health Conversation? Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

One Health at the G20 Summit, Brazil
G20 One Health High-Level Seminar
October 31, 2024
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the respective G20 presidencies, India and Indonesia elevated the position of One Health, underscoring its importance in uniting global health and sustainability efforts. Building upon the strategic dialogues on One Health during previous G20 presidencies, Brazil maintainedhttps://tinyurl.com/darbuzrkT the momentum during its G20 presidency in 2024 drawing the members’ attention to the need for a stronger implementation of One Health commitments. The collective leadership and technical competencies of the Quadripartite (FAO, UNEP, WHO, WOAH) collaboration on One Health, combined with the launch of the One Health Joint Plan of Action in 2022, has provided support to the previous G20 presidencies on how to better reflect One Health in the developmental agenda and ensure there is a paradigm shift and systemic change in the way we prevent, prepare, and respond to future health risks at the human-animal-environment interface. https://tinyurl.com/395vvtss

Reducing the Serendipity of One Health Education

In: NEWS onehealthinitiative.com
Two Students Call for One Health Education starting in Primary/Secondary School “We wrote this article to express to supporters of the One Health Initiative our insights into the adoption of One Health from a student perspective. We hope that our stories not only illustrate our enthusiasm but also demonstrate a shared sense of urgency for One Health education…….. Primary school is an ideal setting for introducing One Health education, as elementary classrooms are dynamic environments where students have not yet divided subjects into separate silos. Such integration will help K-12 students better contextualize interdisciplinary topics and prepare them to address the complex issues of our interconnected world. Teachers are increasingly motivated to adopt One Health education because of its illuminative breadth. By using a One Health perspective, educators can connect diverse subjects and provide students with practical answers to the fundamental question, “Why is this important?” https://tinyurl.com/4n489755

One Health: Highlights and Challenges
Shaping the Future
December 12, 2024 Blog posted in FAO Highlights
“In 2024, key advancements were made in addressing pressing global health challenges, such as antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic diseases, climate change, and food security. However, significant challenges remain, including inequitable access to resources, lack of coordination between sectors, and the need for more robust data and evidence. As we move into 2025, it is imperative to strengthen international collaboration, invest in research and innovation, and empower communities to build a healthier future for all.”

Indigenous Knowledge and One Health
November 27, 2024
Author: Washington State Department of Health - Public Health Connection
Honoring the Indigenous roots of One Health during Native American Heritage Month….. While One Health is often viewed through the lens of Western science, the approach is actually rooted in Indigenous worldviews, values, and teachings. Indigenous knowledge has always recognized the relationship between humans and the environment and emphasized the connection between all living things. Indigenous knowledge includes Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), a knowledge system built on observations and interactions with the natural world and passed down through generations.

Plastics and Health: How We Are All Affected
November 5, 2024
Authors: Richard Seifman, Ok Pannenburg
In: IMPAKTER
Micro and Nano plastics are now pervasive in the air, water, and on land. They affect the health and reproductive health of humans, animals, plants— everything. A Global Plastics Treaty will be the subject of negotiations beginning November. Needed is agreement that includes support for research to identify plastic impact on health and reproductive health, monitoring and control of plastics, and that leads to creation of an International Plastics Control Agency.

Stopping mpox: wild meat markets are a root cause and must be made safer
November 5, 2024
Authors: Steven Lam, Delia Grace
In : The Conversation
More than 1,100 people have died of mpox in Africa, where some 48,000 cases have been recorded since January 2024 in 19 countries. …Strategies to beat the 2024 mpox outbreak have so far largely focused on preventing human-to-human transmission. …But we also need to go back to the root causes of disease, particularly where mpox is transmitted from animals to humans….Applying lessons from food safety is key to solving this urgent public health concern……In a new paper, together with colleagues at CGIAR, a global partnership to address challenges of food systems, we look at promising solutions to address risks from wild meat. ….Key to this is a One Health approach. One Health brings together public health experts, veterinarians, wildlife specialists and community leaders to develop comprehensive measures. https://tinyurl.com/er85wvd3

Raising Awareness and Advocacy for
One Health
November 1, 2024
Author: Fatima Aziz
Blog post on the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID) website for One Health Day 2024
“A fundamental element of collaboration involves the exchange of data and information. Professionals in human health can provide significant insights regarding the patterns and effects of zoonotic diseases within human populations, whereas professionals in animal health can share their expertise on disease transmission and management. The sharing of information enhances the overall comprehension of diseases and supports the formulation of effective prevention and control measures. Although collaboration among professionals is crucial, it is also vital to engage the public regarding the significance of this approach.” https://tinyurl.com/2phz42yx

‘One Health’ needs Ecology,
Gittleman J, PNAS, 121 (50), December 6, 2024, https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2413367121
Currently, One Health is dominated by medical problems. It shouldn’t be. Global environmental catastrophes are on the rise—everything from infrastructure failures (building collapses) to wildfire burns wiping out entire communities to extreme weather events. These are severe problems outside the bailiwick of traditional medicine, but clearly within animal–human–environmental domains……….

The Sound of Silence: Ringing the H5N1 Alarm Bells
Pandemic Action Network (PAN) New Report and Recommendations for H5N1 Action
December, 2024
PAN began monitoring the H5N1 situation in early 2024 and takes stock of its reporting and observations of H5N1’s rise. A review of their 2024 coverage reveals that the world is not adequately paying attention or preparing for a potential H5N1 pandemic threat. There are clear priorities for urgent action — particularly for the incoming U.S. administration. PAN urges prompt and decisive global action in preparing for and responding to the H5N1 outbreak, reinforcing key recommendations from global experts to avert a widespread health emergency or another devastating pandemic. “It is imperative for all countries — particularly those most affected like the U.S. — to take decisive action now.“ https://tinyurl.com/2zfsbds4

Bovine H5N1 influenza from infected worker transmissible and lethal in animal models
October 28, 2024
An important follow up study regarding avian influenza isolated from a farm worker. "A highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus, isolated from the eye of a farm worker who became infected through contact with dairy cows, was lethal in mice and ferrets infected in a high-containment laboratory environment, according to a new study in Nature. The study investigators also found that the virus isolated from the worker, who experienced mild inflammation of the cornea (conjunctivitis), could be transmitted through the air between separated ferrets and might be capable of binding to and replicating in human respiratory tract cells.
