Santa Ana River

At 96 miles long and with nearly 50 tributaries the Santa Ana River is the largest river entirely within Southern California and flows from the crest of the San Bernardino Mountains into the Pacific Ocean near Huntington Beach. Due to the low rainfall, the river carries only a small flow except during the brief winter season when it has been prone to historical flooding.

During the 1930’s the Santa Ana saw a pair of devastating floods that stripped away thousands of acres of topsoil and destroyed many of the citrus groves that had been planted in what is now the cities of Orange and Anaheim. It was at this time that the Army Corp of Engineers made the decision to dam and concrete the river.
