Our Village, Our Story

In the summer of 2020, amid the COVID pandemic, four families in the Village of Elk Rapids chose to come together to remote school their 11 children. One of the projects accomplished by this combined and multi-aged group of children, "The Vibe Tribe" is a storybook about the Village of Elk Rapids. In this storybook, The Little Village Elk Story, the children take you on a wonderful adventure through our Village as a herd of Elks.

The book illustrated by Joani Braun's artwork is finally ready for print!   A patronicity crowdfunding campaign has been set up by the Downtown Elk Rapids Association to pay for the first run of this amazing book.  The link is patronicity.com/elkstory.

All Title and Champion donors will have their names or logos in the book. There is a QR code at the back that takes the buyer to our Discover Elk Rapids website. Please visit the patronicity page for more info and pictures of the book. It is truly amazing and exciting, what an incredible collaboration of local volunteers.

How much 🍎apple knowledge do you have? Did you know?

  • There is a star in every apple.
  • 25% of an apple's volume is air, therefore it can float.
  • Apples contain Vitamin A, Calcium, and Iron all at about 1% of your daily recommended intake. Vitamin C can be found in a medium apple at 10% of your daily intake.
  • One apple also provides 12% of what is recommended daily for dietary fiber.
  • The pectin in apples, which is where the galacturonic acid is derived from, can also help lower "bad" cholesterol by as much as 16% when two apples per day are eaten regularly.
  • Apple trees can live to be 100 years old.
  • Apples are members of the rose family.
  • There is evidence found by archeologists that suggest apples were being eaten as far back as 6500 B.C.
  • Apples originated in Asia.
  • The largest apple ever picked weighed 3 pounds and 2 ounces.

Acme Connector

We are thrilled to share that the Acme Connector is OFFICIALLY OPEN! Investing in trails is investing in people. As the first official segment of the Nakwema Trailway, this project is a catalyst in providing critical connections to support happy, healthy, resilient individuals and communities. Many thanks to the Acme trail team, generous donors, government partners, and local residents who pitched in to make the critical connection a reality.

While the Connector is officially open, it's still not complete. Please bear with us as the finishing touches are still in progress. This includes a closed section that will eventually pass through the KOTI development. This small, yet central section, will be closed and barricaded while project partners work to establish a safe connection through the property.

We look forward to celebrating its official opening with you on October 25 at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony complete with afterglow festivities at Stone Hound Brewing. More here.

Lions Club Accepting Fall Grant Applications

The Elk Rapids Lions Club is currently accepting Organizational Grant Request applications this fall for community projects that support the Club's mission of "serving the community."  Applications will only be accepted if they are received between now and Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The Organizational Grant Requests should be from Elk Rapids and surrounding areas.

“This process gives us the ability to proactively fundraise over and above our annual events as we become aware of special community needs,” said club president Dave Lein.

For more information or an application, organizations should contact the club's Grant Committee Chair Tami Valenzuela via email: tamval@live.com, or by calling 231-735-6799. Applications can also be downloaded directly by visiting:

https://e-clubhouse.org/userfiles/4521/file/OrgRequestForm(1).pdf

Individual Medical and Emergency Assistance:

The Lions Club also accepts requests and responds to emergency assistance from individuals for eyeglasses, hearing aids, and other emergency-related needs throughout the year.

For individual requests and an application, visit https://e-clubhouse.org/sites/elkrapids/page-6.php, contact club treasurer Shirley Hill at 231-258-4894 (lhirley@yahoo.com) or Dave Lein at 231-620-5707 (upnorthdave1@gmail.com) for more information.

The Elk Rapids Lions Club has been actively supporting community projects since 1969.
