Healthy Soil is at the Root of Your Garden


Free Workshop for Adults

Ocean County Soil Conservation District (OCSCD) and the Brick Township Municipal Utilities Authority (Brick Utilities/BTMUA) are teaming-up to bring you this free workshop: Healthy Soil is at the Root of Your Garden, on July 21, 2024, from 10:00am to 11:30am. The workshop is being held at the Brick Reservoir as part of Brick Utilities’ Weekend at the Reservoir community education program. Participants will learn how healthy soil is key for a thriving garden. Join Becky Laboy, Education Coordinator, Ocean County Soil Conservation District as she explains the importance of soil health for productive gardens. Through hands-on activities, explore the composition of soil, identify different soil textures, and learn how water reacts and responds to different soil types. Discover how to select appropriate species of plants for your garden based on your own garden soil. Explore the benefits of proper fertilizer usage for a flourishing landscape while reducing its harmful impacts to the environment and waterways. Explore how a native garden can help reduce stormwater runoff and pollutants from reaching our rivers and Barnegat Bay.

Free "Soils 101" Program for Kids & Families

Join Becky Laboy, Education Outreach Coordinator, Ocean County Soil Conservation District (OCSCD) for a hands-on exploration of soils. That's right - the soil beneath your feet, the sand between your toes! We'll sieve some beach sand, examine the particles. and explore the different sizes, shapes, textures and colors. See how sand, silt and clay each react to water differently. Find out which plants thrive in salty, sandy soil.
