Respect

How does one double the size of an iconic 1836 Gothic Revival church? The answer from Torrey Architecture for the expansion of North Parish Church of North Andover was, “…with Respect…”
…with Respect for the beneficent presence of the 1836 church in the Old Center Historic District…by building the new addition into the hillside and by maintaining the scale of existing elevations.
…with Respect for the historic Sanctuary’s natural vistas through its monumental clear-glass windows…by locating mechanicals within low hipped roofs and the new elevator shaft substantially hidden from interior views.
…with Respect for the Earth…by building sustainably with the latest in energy-efficient climate control systems, lighting and insulation, and by sloping the addition’s roofs to shed snow and rain to shelter against the extremes of New England Weather.
…with Respect for the church community’s Capital Campaign budget…by using conventional materials and residential-scale wood frame construction.
…with Respect for all members of the community regardless of mobility...by providing fully-accessible entries and circulation pathways throughout four levels of indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.
…with Respect for tradition…delighting in the details, while providing generous room for the North Parish community to continue thriving, “Together Under One Roof.”
About the Project
On October 19, 2014, North Parish Church of North Andover Unitarian Universalist fulfilled its “Together Under One Roof” campaign by dedicating the New Wing of the Meeting House while celebrating the 369th year of the Congregation. For more on North Parish Church, click here
The 8,300 Sq. Ft. two-story addition and four-level elevator tower was built by Windover Construction between April and October 2014, replacing and expanding the 1958 Religious Education Wing with flexible classrooms, meeting rooms and storage, while adding office space for clergy and administration. The Sanctuary, Parish Hall, Religious Education and Office levels are now connected together and to the surrounding gardens by means of a four-stop elevator and accessible pathways from two levels of curbside access on the church’s wooded site in North Andover’s Old Center Historic District.
