In 1892, Charles Woodward established the first Woodward store at the corner of Main and Georgia Streets in Vancouver. On September 12, 1902, Woodward Department Stores Ltd. was incorporated and a new store was built on the corner of Hastings and Abbott. Woodward's operated in Alberta and BC before its sale to the Hudson's Bay Company in 1993.
During those 100 years in operation, Woodward’s was a much beloved store known for its “Food Floor,” “$1.49 Day” sales, and their Christmas windows.
These holiday catalogues span the decades from 1953 to 1992 while this Santa was featured in the 1971 and 1972 catalogues. Santa was rescued by Gerald Day, who worked at Woodward's starting in the 1970s and remained with the firm through to the end of the business in 1993. Gerald took Santa in the early 1980s, thinking that his children might enjoy it, and eventually donated it to the MOV in 2021.
