Making Memories on Earth Day
Earth Day 2023 was a resounding success, thanks to volunteers like you! We are extremely thankful to Senator Whitehouse for attending and helping plant new trees in Miantonomi Park alongside our local community members, including Cub Scout Pack 33! A special thanks also to the volunteers from Citizens, who recently awarded NTC with the Citizens in Action award.

Through the combined efforts of 40 volunteers, 14 of whom were children, we were able to care for many trees this year and make a direct impact on the environment. The two Eastern Red Cedars, Juniperus virginiana, planted this year will have a huge impact: these trees over the next five years will be able to absorb up to 80 pounds of atmospheric carbon dioxide each!

Thank you again for assisting us to care for our local community on Earth Day. We would love to see you throughout the year. If you’re interested on ways to make an impact and volunteer with us, read more here.
Arbor Day in Newport
This April Newport was chosen to host the State Arbor Day celebration at Miantonomi Park. The Newport Tree Conservancy, alongside the Newport Tree and Open Space Commission and the RI Tree Council, hosted the event which was primarily sponsored by the RI Energy Corporation. Sugar maple, scarlet oak, and kousa dogwood were planted at the park in honor of the day.

It was a pleasure to have Governor Dan McKee and Newport’s Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong with us, speaking on the importance of trees in our community. Special guests from Pell Elementary were also there to show off crafts they made demonstrating the structure of the trees including leaves, bark, and vascular tissue.

As the Arbor Day Foundation says, “…Arbor Day represents a hope for the future. The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow to provide us with clean air and water, cooling shade, habitat for wildlife, healthier communities, and endless natural beauty — all for a better tomorrow.”
Tree Corps Kick-Off Success
The season of Tree Corps started off this past Thursday on May 4th, beginning it's third year of caring for city trees! With help from volunteers we were able to lend a helping hand to various trees in Miantonomi Park to enable them to grow even stronger in the years to come.

Tree Corps is a vital part of community engagement and care. Meeting every Thursday during the growing season into October, there is always a need for more volunteers. Experience is not necessary! Tools are provided. All you need to bring is an enthusiasm for the world around you.

The next two Tree Corps Thursdays will be spent in Morton Park, and we look forward to seeing you there!
