April 22 is Earth Day, an annual day dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about environmental protection. Here in Greater Sudbury, we innately understand the importance of a healthy environment: for more than 50 years, we have been the site of a world-renowned land reclamation program that has planted over 10 million trees in our community. Our regreening efforts have spurred the cooperation of government, private industry, academia and thousands of resident volunteers.
Last month, we saw some of the progress that the City is making in lowering our greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change. While we know there is more action required to get to net-zero by 2050, we see visible signs of a climate-healthy community, such as the extended cycling infrastructure along the Paris/Notre Dame bikeway and the high rates of GOVA transit ridership.
Internally, the City’s Climate Action Resource Team (CART) works to coordinate corporate climate action across all municipal departments. The Strong Neighbours Climate Change Resilience Project has helped local groups implement climate adaptation actions at the neighbourhood level.
We can all do something positive for the environment, and these small steps add up. This Earth Day, I hope you will consider taking action to ensure we have a clean and healthy environment for all generations to enjoy.
