As you read this week's newsletter, I am in the final stages of preparing to leave for Salt Lake City, UT. Having been elected as the Teaching Elder Commissioner to this year's General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), I will be engaged in meetings with other Teaching Elders, Ruling Elders, and Advisory Delegates from throughout the nation and the world. You may ask yourself, why is this important? Let me share a couple of my responses to that question.
First, it is important because as Presbyterians, we see value in being a connectional church. By this we mean, through the Spirit, we are connected with other Presbyterians engaged in the work of Jesus Christ. We do not exclude fellow believers from other denominations in our sense of conventionalism but do believe that since we have chosen to be Presbyterians, we live out our faith in a similar way. This is expressed in the understanding that the actions and decisions which we take at Balmoral Presbyterian Church has an impact upon those who worship in other PCUSA churches in Memphis, the MidSouth Presbytery, the Synod of Living Waters, and wherever else the PCUSA label is attached to a worshiping community. The reverse is also true.
Second, my participation in the meeting of the General Assembly is a fulfillment of one of my ordination vows: "Will you be active in government and discipline, serving in the councils of the church..." As a commissioner to General Assembly, I fulfill this portion of my vows. This vow also supports our understanding of being a member of the connectional church. My responsibilities as an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament include working within the larger church context.
Third, relates to another Presbyterian principle. This principle is that within the many voices, the Spirit speaks. By this I mean, when diverse individuals discuss, debate, and act upon matters of what it means to be the Church in this place and time, the Spirit guides us. Each voice is unique and provides something to the dialogue which is necessary to experience the fullness of the Lord's voice.
In a few weeks, I will reflect on what took place at this year's General Assembly. I encourage you to tune into the work whenever you have an opportunity by going to https://ga-pcusa.org/. Who knows, you might even see me on the video feed some time.
Blessings,
Pastor Mark

BOOK CLUB
Tuesday, July 9
1:30pm
For our mid-year meeting on Tuesday, July 9 (1:30 p.m.) we are going to do something different: we will meet at
Otherlands Coffee Bar at 641 Cooper St. in midtown.
Our "assignment" is any story of your choosing from the many short story collections of the late Alice Munro, a highly acclaimed author of short stories who died last month. Ms. Munro received both the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Man Booker Prize. According to Wikipedia, the Canadian author's stories "explore human complexities in an uncomplicated prose style. Her writing established her reputation as a great author in the vein of Anton Chekhov." Her story collections are readily available in local libraries.
We will share our thoughts on the story(ies) each of us reads.
Looking further ahead, in August we will meet at the house of Jan Kaplan, and Robin Ashworth will lead us in a discussion of Remarkably Bright Creatures, by Shelby Van Pelt. Our September book will be Abide with Me by Elizabeth Stroutt, led by Bevery Hooker (location TBD.)
