NETWORK NEWS

October 14, 2022

Good Morning!

Fall is here! We hope those who celebrate were able to spend time with loved ones in a local sukkah. In October we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness with our national members Sharsheret. Celebrated every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to recognize the contributions of people with disabilities to our workplaces and economy. This year's theme, Disability: Part of the Equity Equation, recognizes the important role that individuals with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce.

White House National Strategy to Address Hunger

NJHSA applauded President Biden and Vice President Harris for convening last month’s White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health. Pledging to end hunger in America by 2030, the Administration released its new National Strategy, which contains bold and innovative proposals to address the problem of persistent hunger, including several recommended by NJHSA. Please direct questions to Elizabeth Cullen, Washington Representative, NJHSA & Associate Director, Health Policy, JFNA.

Mental Health Legislation Advances

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed H.R. 7780, the Mental Health Matters Act. NJHSA has advocated for mental health parity and enforcement to ensure that clients of our member agencies receive the mental health and behavioral health benefits to which they are legally entitled.

Congress also recently passed and sent to the President legislation that will expand community health center grants to create mobile health care units. For questions, please contact Elizabeth Cullen.

National Adult Protective Services Training

The National APS Training Center (NATC) serves as a source of quality education for adult protective services (APS) professionals throughout the United States. APS professionals encounter a vast array of situations in their daily work that require them to be well trained to respond to older adults and adults with disabilities who may have experienced abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
