I was happy to learn that a friend receives the JSL newsletter and uses its arrival at 3:30pm in his inbox every Friday as a reminder to call his children to wish them Shabbat Shalom. In that moment I realized that the power of the written word inspires us into action. How often do we read or hear something that moves us, that sticks with us, that propels us into action? It could be a conversation, a letter, an article in innumerable newspapers, a Facebook post, or a phone call to share our thoughts, our wishes, our hopes. Whether we are reacting to serious articles on politics, war and peace, human rights, and democracy, or humor and wisdom that softens our souls, WE CAN BELIEVE that together we are part of the human condition and every action we take influences others. There are so many voices, and we can choose to listen, read, think, and learn.

FRIENDS

If you weren’t at the Meer Fashion Show on Tuesday, you missed a very, very good time. We had 20 hams, I mean residents, strut their stuff (and the boutique’s stuff) looking extremely glamorous, thanks to the expert ministrations of Meer resident and make-up artist Sharon Eaton. Models were Ada Bandalene, Edie Blumer, Malka Braunstein, Audrey Demak, Esther Dines, Rachel Galazan, Ruth Katz, Sophie Klisman, Jean Lutren, Shirley Moscow, Margaret Pathak, Ron Rasansky, June Rubenstein, Lorraine Sallan, Elizabeth Silver, Marcia Tanzman, Debbie Warner, Sima Weberman, Henrietta Weinberg, and Susan Weiner.

Big, big thank you to our wonderful volunteers, Debbi Bragman, Sandy Eidelman, Robyn Flam, Margery Jablin, Geri Margolis, Andrea Margolis-Stillman, Marsha Proghovnick, and Kelli Rosenzweig! The good news is that you get another chance to enjoy the fun – we’re having our Sharon’s boutique fashion show at Fleischman on Wednesday, April 10 at 2:00pm!

Passover is coming quickly, and we still have a couple of opportunities to lead seders at Jewish Senior Life residences in Oak Park. The seders are at 4:00pm or 4:30pm for 30-40 minutes. We have a Haggadah and Rabbi Polter has prepared a list of what should be covered with page numbers. I hope you’ll add this to your Pesach tradition. Please call or email me if you’d like to spend some special time with our residents on the holiday.

Another good time you won’t want to miss out on is the Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration, which will be Friday, June 21, at 10:30am at Adat Shalom Synagogue. We will be celebrating our 95 and older friends with a circus-themed brunch and will need lots of volunteers. Please email or call me if you would like to join in the fun! Also, don’t forget to register anyone you know who will be 95 or older by December 31, 2024 on our website.

TREE OF LIFE ART

Fleischman residents created trees using paper plates and yarn. This gentle activity unleashes creativity and allows for socialization and individual expression. JSL Life Enrichment personnel have unlimited ideas for clever projects that bring joy and fun to the residents.

ENDLESS TALENT

Residents in Oak Park prove that age is but a number and passion knows no bounds as they performed in the First Annual JSL Resident Choice Talent Show. Resident Valinda Brown, teamed up with staff to organize this special show that encouraged all the participants to get involved by either singing, performing in sketches, or telling some great jokes. An audience of friends, family, and peers cheered for the performers during this spectacular event.

WORKOUT OF

THE WEEK

Physical Therapist Margaret Martin identifies the most important exercise for seniors and individuals over 50. The video includes an Introduction, Basic Standing Heel Raise, Basic Standing Heel Raise with Weights, Modified Heel Raise Exercise, and Single Leg Heel Raise, all focusing on the right movements to improve strength and muscle.

Dunce caps used to be signs of intelligence Thirteenth-century philosopher John Duns Scotus believed that a pointed cap would help spread knowledge from the tip to the brain, and his “Dunsmen” followers wore them as a badge of honor. In the 1500s, though, his ideas became less popular and the meaning of the Duns cap was turned on its head, becoming something of a joke.

If I Forget O Jerusalem…

A Passover Insight

(The first in a Passover series)

Traditionally, twice a year, a Jew cries out: "Next year, let us be in [the built] Jerusalem”; at the closing of the Yom Kippur service and at the closing of the Passover seder. These are auspicious moments when the Jewish people plead for the eternal redemption. Thus, the longing toward our final return to Jerusalem with the ultimate redemption is intricately connected to these two holidays.

"If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, may my right (yemini) hand forget its skill (Psalm 137:5).

I'm reminded of a 100 year old resident I was visiting before Passover in a remote city. As I entered Minnie’s room, she looked at me in wonderment and confusion and asked me if I remember her.

I took the liberty to quote King David’s verse, "If I forget the O Jerusalem, then let my right hand (yemini) its skill. "Yemini" as in her name "Minnie."

Just as we cannot afford to forget Jerusalem and our desperate need to return there soon, so too can we never forget a single Jew named Minnie who resided in a care community in Michigan.

Our sacred city of Jerusalem is not merely a geographic location but it also occupies a prominent place in our hearts and souls. Minnie was the single Jewish senior in her facility. She was the Jerusalem of her remote senior community, hoping and anticipating to return to Jerusalem’s holy soil.

We are all mini Jerusalem’s eagerly waiting to reconnect and return to our holy city of Jerusalem on the map. May our return take place speedily in our days.

Passover is an opportune time to remember that Jerusalem is our home base. We will forever long to return to its sacred soil.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
