SETTLED SEARCH TEAM UPDATE

As we head into the weekend, please take a moment to feel a quiet satisfaction for your role in helping us reach our ambitious response goal for the Ministerial Search Survey. The Search Team spent this week poring over the results, and you have certainly given us a lot to think about and a lot to work with as we build the model for our ideal candidate. We will do some of that poring and contemplating this weekend as we depart on Sunday for the wilds of Indiana and an overnight retreat.

RECURRING WEEKLY EVENTS
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
Norma Ione Hilsabeck was born to Louis and Edith (Shanks) Hilsabeck on April 8, 1925, in Pana, Illinois. She moved to Urbana in 1944. She married Bill Childers in 1947. In addition to being Bill’s partner in numerous projects and adventures, she was the executive secretary for Harlan Moore’s building supply business. In 1957, Norma had one son, also named Bill. After her husband Bill died in 1984, she spent winters in Ft. Myers, Florida, with her sister Lois. In 2002, Norma and Lois bought a house across the street from her son, Bill, his wife Barb, and most importantly, her grandchildren, Gwen and Wil lie. For the last 6 years, Willie has been Norma’s caretaker. Norma lived a long and vivid life until July 19, 2022, when she quietly slipped away surrounded by her family.

To celebrate Norma’s life, we will have a service at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign, 309 W. Green St., Urbana, on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 7 pm. Please bring a mask in case the church requires masks to be worn at that time.

In November, we are planning on giving members access to an online directory via Breeze that will provide each member's general contact information (name, mailing address, phone, email address). Only UUCUC members will have access to the online directory.

All orders sent through Amazon are delivered to Julie's house and split between the two pantries. You are also welcome to drop off items in person at both locations. Questions? JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, October 2, 2022.

From Sam Beshers: For the joyous pride celebration in Urbana yesterday.

From Marsha Clinard: My brother and his wife in Bonita springs, Florida are safe after sheltering from Ian. Their home was not damaged though they have no power. Sorrow that the beautiful place where we go each year , Sanibel Island, is devastated.

From Gail Cohen: My sweet friend Erich finally succumbed to brain canter after a valiant battle. He was only 48.

From Linda Collinsworth: Proud of my brave and wonderful daughter Kelly Halcom who stands up and advocates for marginalized peoples even when she faces challenges from powerful others

From Rev. Sally Fritsche: Joy and relief that my siblings and nephews in St Petersburg FL are safe and whole after hurricane Ian. Sorrow for those who were not so lucky, and for everyone recovering in the storm’s wake.

From Jody Hanger: Heartbreaking news - I learned this week of the death of Ellen de Ward's daughter Sophie. She was 22. Many of us taught Sophie and her siblings in RE, and Ellen has attended church here for many years.

From The Herzog Family: Our own lgbtq kiddo has opened our hearts and minds to the challenges and struggles of this population. And yesterday’s pride celebration gave us hope that our kids and countless others might find a world that loves and supports them fully. Yay CU—spread your kindness far and wide!

From Jenny Hunt: Jenny and Kristi are grieving having to let their almost 13 year old Yorkie, Dasher go onto his next journey in the ethers on Friday. He was your typical stubborn ornery Yorkie on the one hand but so loving on the other hand. He is so missed by both of us as well as his canine buddy who can’t figure out yet what has happened.
Please send your joys or sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org any time before the Joys and Sorrows portion of the service. They will be read aloud.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

SOCIAL ACTION OFFERING FOR OCTOBER 2022
Trauma & Resilience Initiative is a non-profit organization and community of individuals who are working to help make Champaign County a trauma & justice informed community where everyone has the right to be, become, and belong.

The strategies used to accomplish these goals are to provide education and information about trauma & structural inequities and its impact throughout the community, helping healers, educators, and leaders address the needs of those affected; and supporting survivors impacted by community violence and community adversity with healing, wellness, and recovery support.

To that end, we provide a range of healing centered support for survivors, their families, and their communities from the moment of crisis throughout their healing journeys; and for those healers, educators, and helpers that work with them. We believe ‘it takes a village to heal.’
During the month of August, our shared offering was able to raise $2,020.50 for The Education Justice Project.

The Education Justice Project (EJP) is a college-in-prison program based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. EJP offers college courses for credit, as well as extracurricular activities, at Danville Correctional Center, a medium-security men’s prison about 45 miles from the Urbana-Champaign campus.
