(The Road to Emmaus, an 1887 painting by Robert Mund)
(Read Luke 24:13-35)
“Pastor, is it true? Is Jesus on the loose?”
Monday morning, we celebrated Resurrection Day at Castle Peak Senior Life and Rehab center. With faithful volunteers, we hold a church service every Monday morning at 10:00 AM. What a joy it is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus each and every week.
This Monday, before service, I walked over to Jim Spiker, a regular attender, who is now over 90 years old.
I said, “Mornin’ Jim, Happy Easter!”
With a big smile on his face, he responded to my statement with a question…
“Pastor, is it true? Is Jesus on the loose?”
I responded, “Oh yes, Jim He most certainly is! He’s not dead, He is Risen! Jesus is on the loose!”
We both laughed with Resurrection Joy.
Death could not stop Jesus, and our sins could not contain his enduring and faithful love for us. Jesus died for us, rose for us, and lives in us. Jesus didn’t go hide, instead, he came to many, and he still does. Jesus still comes to us today in his Word, and in his Holy Supper.. Jesus is on the loose!
In our Gospel reading this week, Luke 24:13-35, we travel the road to Emmaus with two of Jesus’ sad followers. Jesus rose from the dead, but the men didn’t know it yet. Heartbroken and confused they walked down the road of disappointment to Emmaus. Along the way, someone walked with them who would change their lives forever.
When the two men returned to their friends they had something to say….
“It is true! The Lord has risen…” (v.34)
We have something to say too. “CHRIST IS RISEN!”
See you Sunday - I can’t wait!
