Lottery Now Open for Afterschool Programs

Durham Public Schools Community Education – the department responsible for after-school programming – will conduct a lottery for elementary afterschool programs this year. The lottery opened on Monday, March 18, and will close on April 19 at 5 p.m. Afterschool lottery results will be emailed to families on Friday, May 3.


An email has been sent to families with details about the lottery and the steps for entering. For more information about this year’s lottery process, please visit Community Education’s webpage at www.dpsnc.net/afterschool.

Food Assistance Program Available for the Summer

North Carolina is launching a new food assistance program for students this summer! SUN Bucks will provide grocery-buying benefits to qualifying families with school-aged children during the summer months. Benefits can be used to buy healthy food at places like grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online retailers. Qualifying families will receive a one-time payment of $120 per eligible child for the summer.

Youth Leadership Summit Aims to Teach High Schoolers about Local Government

Durham youth in high school grades are encouraged to attend the DCo ForwardTogether Youth Leadership and Community Building Summit, set to take place on Thursday, April 11. The summit aims to increase knowledge and understanding of public administration and interest in pursuing careers in local government. Summit attendees will tour a Durham County facility, engage with county staff and officials, and participate in a town hall-like discussion and networking session.

DPS Game of the Week: Northern High School

Come watch the Northern Knights take on two teams in two exciting baseball games taking place simultaneously on April 4 at 117 Tom Wilkinson Road. The Knights will take on Voyager Academy and the N.C. School of Science and Math in two separate games, both taking place at 6 p.m. Support our local teams and enjoy a great night out with the family! 

School Spotlight: Jordan High School

Agriculture teachers and students stayed after school at Jordan High to participate in a cross-curricular activity with the school's Foods teacher and Culinary teacher. They were able to see the new JHS Culinary CTE kitchen and try out their skills. Our CTE students are gaining marketable skills while learning in their pathways!
