Kids Heart Challenge

A huge heartfelt thank you to all students, families and staff who participated in the Kids Heart Challenge this year. Together, students raised almost $17,000 for the American Heart Association, proving that Northwood School truly has heart!

Students rose to every challenge set before them, and then exceeded it as if there really was no limit. It was inspiring to witness, and exhausting to keep up with! In health class this month, students focused on the five pillars of health: exercise, nutrition, hydration, sleep and stress reduction/relaxation. We practiced habits that promote the health of our brain, heart and lungs. We learned the warning signs of a stroke. Many students, including those who completed Finn’s Mission, learned hands-only CPR. We attempted to jump rope many times, but March came with its own challenges, and many recesses were indoor due to inclement weather. Despite limited opportunities, some students learned to jump rope for the first time, and many others improved their skills!

To celebrate this record-setting year, we will be holding an all-school celebration during dismissal on Tuesday, April 2nd. The celebration will be set up so that all students get to experience the joy and gratitude from the American Heart Association, so regardless of how your student gets home, they will be included. This school-wide event is for all students and staff, regardless of participation in the 2024 Kids Heart Challenge. Just be in school and stay until dismissal on 4/2/24! This event will be attended by the American Heart Association Regional Director, Northwood Hannaford leadership team, Ms. Murray, Mr. Micali, and many other staff members at the school! There will be a small token of appreciation for everyone.

2024 Kids Heart Challenge stats:

215 students signed up (107 online)

68 students completed Finn’s Mission

71 families learned hands-only CPR

Total Raised: $16,776.00+

With many thanks to the American Heart Association, nine (9) teachers will be awarded a $25 Amazon gift card to use for their classroom. Northwood School has also earned some grant money for reaching so many of our participation and fundraising goals. This money will help boost Health education at Northwood School. Many, many thanks for all of the enthusiasm, hard work, and interest in those five pillars of health.

With gratitude,

Ms. Murray

From the Technology Department

A few months ago I mentioned keeping track of your pictures on devices. Once again I ran across someone who almost lost years of photos only because the device was being traded in for a new one. Back in the old days of physical photographs and photo albums, it was easier to keep track of getting and keeping precious memories. Nowadays, we take more pictures and end up keeping less. We end up with a false sense of security thinking that if they are in the cloud then they are protected. Based on my experience that isn’t always the case.

Every once and awhile make sure to manually backup your photos and videos to something you have direct control of. Maybe an external drive or your other computer. It will be worth it many years later when you want to look up a favorite memory.
