Heart of the Arts Gala Auction
Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH
Saturday, April 29, at 6:30 pm, the Jaffrey Civic Center will host its second annual Heart of the Arts Gala Auction. This year’s event boasts over 100 pieces of artwork and will have both a virtual silent auction and a live auction. In addition to having a fabulous night out immersed in the arts, guests at this year’s event will enjoy a cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres provided by Foray Catering of Marlborough and entertainment by guitarist Chris Salemme. Tickets ($40 per person/$60 for two) are available on the Gala website.

The Civic Center is a community-focused nonprofit organization that has provided cultural and civic activities to residents and visitors for more than 55 years. Proceeds from the Gala support the wide variety of exhibitions, performances, and educational programs the Center offers year-round.

In addition to supporting the Center, the auction offers an excellent opportunity to support local artists, as they may retain up to 60 percent of the proceeds of the sale of their work. The virtual silent auction (https://app.galabid.com/heartofthearts23) is already up and running and will be open until 8:30 pm April 30. Artwork in the virtual silent auction can be bid on regardless of the bidder’s ability to attend the Gala.

The local business community has also graciously stepped up with generous support, with Microspec and Belletetes committing to Platinum sponsorship, Atlas Fireworks signing on as a Gold sponsor, and Sorby and Son Heating and Savings Bank of Walpole pledging support at the Silver level. The Center is grateful to these establishments for their community spirit and for championing the good works of the Jaffrey Civic Center. Coll’s Farm Stand is contributing flowers to add some color to the event. The Center is also delighted to welcome Harold French, who is generously donating his time as the auctioneer for the evening and will be instrumental in keeping the auction running smoothly.

Concert of Folk, Indie-Pop, Experimental Music
Montague Center, MA
Saturday, May 6, 2023, 7:30 - 10pm
Suggested Donation $10-20, no one turned away

Performers:
Isaac Taylor, singer-songwriter from Martha’s Vineyard
Miners, experimental folk improvisation from Greenfield
Cloudbelly, indie-folk and pop from Turners Falls
Montague Common Hall, 34 Main St, Montague Center, MA

On the evening of May 6, 2023, a three-act bill of local and touring musicians will perform at the historic Montague Common Hall in Montague Center, MA. Hailing from diverse corners of the state, these musical groups will take the audience on a journey through three different, unique takes on folk music. Featuring Isaac Taylor, Miners, and Cloudbelly, this convergence of nationally renowned musicians will be a magical and inspiring event that you won’t want to miss.

Opening the show will be Martha’s Vineyard based singer-songwriter Isaac Taylor. Nephew to James Taylor, Livingston Taylor, and Kate Taylor, to say that music is in his blood is an understatement. Isaac’s debut album Peace in the Valley, created in collaboration with Andrew and Brad Barr (The Barr Brothers, The Slip) has earned him rave reviews and fans across the country. Isaac has toured with Martin Secton, Leif Vollebekk, and the David Wax Museum, and this is first show in Western Massachusetts!

Cloudbelly is the moniker of Great Falls, MA based singer-songwriter Corey Laitman. Laitman's poetic lyricism, stirring vocals, and disarming stage presence have earned them a strong and growing following in the pioneer valley and beyond. They are accompanied by a rotating cast of inspired instrumentalists and friends.

"A moving display of fragility and surrender, Cloudbelly’s debut single “Up in Smoke” weaves wondrous and haunting indie folk into a seismic outpouring of intimate emotion." - Atwood Magazine

Closing the show will be Miners, a Western Mass based collective of experimental musicians devoted to exploring and exploding traditional folk music from the United States. Appalachian music, Spirituals, Labor Union Songs, and more are fodder for sonic collage, group improvisation, and the occasional pretty tune. With Jesse Olsen Bay (guitar, voice, electronics), Myk Freedman (lap steel), Lindsey Song Stormo (voice, percussion), and Rafe Wolman (violin).

Isaac Taylor, Miners, and Cloudbelly perform on Saturday, May 6 from 7:30 - 10pm at the Montague Center Common Hall, 34 Main St, Montague Center. Suggested donation is $10-20, with nobody turned away for lack of funds. For more information, contact Jesse Olsen Bay at (510) 387-0765 or tangledmusic@gmail.com. This event has been organized with the support of Riverculture.

Workshop fees are $70 for SRAG members and $90 for non-members. The theme of the workshop is “Painting Urban Landscapes” This is open to all abilities with some watercolor experience suggested. Artists interested in the urban landscape theme and working in other media can contact John if they like and talk about the possibilities of registering for this workshop. He has painted some urban and architectural scenes in oils.

SRAG will have coffee and tea, please bring a lunch. For Workshop Registration or more information, please contact: Carolyn Berglund at poohbear@ne.rr.com. Masks and COVID-19 vaccinations are required to attend the SRAG workshops.

In this SRAG Workshop John will explain and demonstrate the steps that he generally follows when painting an urban landscape such as the street scenes in Brattleboro or Bellows Falls. He will demonstrate the progression of steps from a photograph to a sketch on the watercolor paper and then the gradual development working toward the finished painting. Participants are encouraged to bring a couple of photos of their own to work from. John will also bring some photos along for them to try including the photo he will be using as a reference if they’d prefer. Participants should expect to start working on their own after a brief introduction and then gather back at his table to observe certain steps as they arise. John will have several finished paintings or prints of street scenes that are completed on hand as examples from which he will point out certain unusual techniques that are used.

John Dimick is an award winning artist at various juried shows. Vermont Artisans Designs Gallery carries many of his paintings, prints, and notecards. Dimick was the cover artist featured in the January/February edition of Monadnock Table Magazine out of Keene. Writer Diana Damato described his work: “Dimick’s work ranges from nature-based scenes to city sites, including locations in downtown Brattleboro, machine shops, unique perspectives of bridges, and western United States and European settings.” Examples of his work may be viewed on his website: johndimickartist.com

Founded in 1976, the Saxtons River Art Guild is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote and encourage the advancement of the fine arts with about 80 members throughout the Monadnock region in New Hampshire, the Southern Connecticut River Valley area of Vermont, and western Massachusetts.
