WFCM News For You

Executive Director's Update

As I shared in our April newsletter, in March we saw an increase in families needing food support due to inflation, decreased wages, and the end of federal supplemental benefits such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) emergency allotments that ended in February. We served 16% more families in March 2023 than in March 2022. Unfortunately, this trend continued in April with 15% more families served in April 2023 compared to April 2022.

In order to meet this growing need, we have taken several steps. First, to meet the immediate need families faced in March/April, we offered a School's Out Food distribution on April 1st, the Saturday before the Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) Spring Break. We also increased the food provided in the Free Food Fridge program at 11 FCPS locations to include turkey breast, single slices of cheese, fruit juice, and pizza (in addition to the standard breakfast and lunch items we provide weekly). I am thankful for two Fairfax County Government Food Access Program grants that provided funds for this food (and will continue to provide funds to supplement these programs through June).

At our Chantilly Client Choice Food Pantry, we added appointment slots to increase our capacity and we are in the process of opening our second Food Pantry in Centreville where we plan to start with 250 appointments available each month.

Having access to a client choice food pantry is critical to improving food security for families. A client recently posted the following "five star" review of our services:

“Thanks to your organization for providing me with food for my family, that is a great help at this time when there is a lot of crises, very expensive food and I love it because you can choose what you need, such as fresh vegetables, dairy products and canned products, personal hygiene products, baby items, and much more. Thanks to all the donors and the very friendly staff who serve you."

We want more families to have this experience that provides options for healthy food in a way that is dignified and puts the client in control to select the right foods for their family.

I look forward to keeping you updated regarding the second client choice food pantry. We expect to begin the renovation in early May. I appreciate your support with this exciting process that will allow us to reach more families in need.

Thank you and God bless,

Harmonie Taddeo, Executive Director

PS - I hope to see many of you at the Feed Fairfax 5k on Saturday May 6th or our golf tournament on May 22nd! The race supports WFCM's Free Food Fridge program and Food For Others' power pack program. The golf tournament supports our operations and expansion into Centreville.

April 2023 Service Update

In April, we began distributing 75 diapers per baby as part of the Greater DC Diaper Bank Emergency Hub, because in recent months we were running out of diapers mid-month when we were providing 100 diapers per baby/toddler. Our goal is to provide diapers more equitably in partnership with GDCDB and their other partners in the region.

What's New in the Food Pantry and Client Services with Pamela Montesinos

Director of Client Operations & Programs

On April 18th we held our Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Thirty-nine of our 110 weekly volunteers earned Presidential Volunteer Service awards for volunteering 100+ hours in 2022. Three earned silver and gold level awards, volunteering for 250-499 hours (silver) and 500+ hours (gold). We are thankful for the support of these dedicated volunteers who pick up grocery store donations; stock shelves, refrigerators, and freezers; bag groceries for clients; and more!

I attended the English Empowerment Center Job and Opportunities Fair on April 17th and have been actively looking to fill the two new positions at our Centreville Food Pantry. I am happy to share that we have filled both positions. Angel Ortiz will serve as the Centreville Food Pantry Manager. He begins training in Chantilly on May 1. Alejandra Hurtado begins training on May 8th as the Centreville Client Intake Coordinator.

This month we are preparing for our next School's Out Food Distribution that will be held in June to provide extra food for students when school is out for the summer. We are happy to have Food Access Program grant funds from Fairfax County Government to provide this supplemental food at this critical time of need. Already, this month we were able to increase the food provided in the Free Food Fridge program at 11 FCPS locations to include turkey breast, single slices of cheese, fruit juice, and pizza (photos below).

We are happy to welcome Angel Ortiz to the WFCM Team! Angel will serve as the full-time Centreville Client Choice Food Pantry Manager. He is training in Chantilly this month as we prepare to open the new location.

Client Spotlight - Tango Empanadas and Bakery Owner, Fanny C.

Fanny C. is one of the participants in WFCM’s Mustard Seed Microloan program this fiscal year. With a desire to start a business, Fanny participated in classes at WFCM led by Northern Virginia Family Services and received a secured loan for $1,000 to start her business. With the funds and knowledge, Fanny has made amazing strides to reach her goals related to opening her own business. Tango Empanadas & Bakery is now operational with a website where customers can place orders for delivery. Fanny makes traditional Argentinian empanadas “baked and handmade from scratch” as well as traditional Argentinian tarts called “crema pastelera”, cookies, and bread.

Fanny shared with us recently, "I am grateful to the organization for all the support to start my dream" when Pamela had the opportunity to visit her booth and sample her delicious food.

We are impressed with Fanny’s commitment to reaching her goal of business-ownership and happy to have played a small role in her success.

As we take a giant leap forward to improve food security in our community by opening a client choice food pantry in Centreville, we are happy to share that a new "match" partner has come forward to pledge $10,000 to match your donations during our Spring fundraiser campaign. WingSwept, with an office located near our Chantilly Client Choice Food Pantry, will match your donations up to $10,000. In combination with the Centreville family who provided a $25,000 match - this means your donations are matched $1 for $1 up to $35,000 when you donate by June 30th.

Thank you for your support of our operations including our second client choice pantry opening this summer near Centreville Regional Library in Centreville Square 2.
