Groundbreaking research lead by Danforth Center Principal Investigators Rebecca Bart, PhD, Nigel Taylor, PhD, and their collaborators has identified a genetic mutation that confers resistance to cassava mosaic disease. Their findings have significant implications for improving cassava yield and sustaining farmer income in the face of a widespread disease, and their discovery could also shed light on disease-resistance in other major crops. The 39 North agtech startup, which recently won a 2022 Fire Award from St. Louis Business Journal’s Inno, transformed a weed into a profitable cash crop. Anchored by the Danforth Center, 39 North has experienced significant growth since its inception in 2017, and is home to over 1,000 plant science PhDs, more than 700 bioscience companies and has $2 billion in bioscience venture capital under local management.
