IRS Increases Limit for ABLE Accounts:

Beginning this month, the IRS has increased the annual federal gift tax exclusion. This increase, the result of inflation, also applies to the deposit limit for ABLE accounts.

ABLE accounts, which allow people with disabilities to save money while maintaining eligibility for Social Security and other government benefits, can be used to pay for qualified disability expense (including education, health care, transportation, and housing).

NC Change to Medicaid Tailored Plans

As of April 1, 2023, individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual/developmental disabilities who have Medicaid will have their physical health care coordinated by one of six Tailored Plans through the Local Management Entity/Managed Care Organization (LME/MCOs). With the change, Medicaid recipients need to have their primary care providers and practices added to the Tailored Plan provider network. The Arc NC has created a letter to assist you with speaking to your loved one's primary care provider.

Students with Intellectual Disability Paves the Way for College Athletics Rule Change

Sebastian De Simone petitions NCAA to join collegiate track team

Sebastian DeSimone is a college student enrolled in an Integrated Studies certificate program for students with intellectual disabilities. The NCAA typically requires that collegiate athletes are enrolled full-time in degree-bearing (not certificate) programs, but Sebastian's mother did the research and requested the school submit a waiver to the NCAA. Not only was the waiver approved, enabling Sebastian to participate on his school's cross-country team, but the NCAA's subcommittee for legislative relief approved a change making it easier for students with intellectual disabilities to compete in Division III athletics.
