Women, Life, Freedom Protests in Iran

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 18

Time: 4-5:30 p.m.

Location: Hiebert Lounge

All members of the BUMC community are invited to “Women, Life, Freedom Protests in Iran,” a safe space to discuss and learn more about the protests taking place in Iran in response to the arrest and death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on Sept. 16.

Amini was arrested by the Iranian morality police a few days earlier for showing some of her hair under her hijab, which violates the Islamic Republic’s dress code. The police and military have responded to the protests with increased acts of violence, restricting internet access and not allowing media coverage. It is estimated that more than 130 people have been killed and countless others injured by security forces, including students at Sharif University. While the level of violence and abuse has been heartbreaking and disturbing, the acts of resistance and fight for social justice have been inspiring and historic for communities in Iran and around the globe.
