2022 AAAA Convention Ready for Action!

There is no doubt about it. The 2022 AAAA Convention is garnering unprecedented attention and excitement. We now have almost 150 registered attendees, 62 sellers, and almost 90 booked hotel rooms. If you are starting to regret not registering, unfortunately the registration deadline has already passed.

However, all is not lost. If you live in the vicinity of central Ohio, you can attend the Convention festivities on Friday, July 15 as part of our FREE "Public Day". No registration is required. Bring along your non-AAAA collector friends. The Public Day includes a Silent Auction from 1:00-3:30 PM and Room Hopping from 3:30-10:00 PM, with a break from 6:00-7:15 PM. Just come to the Embassy Suites-Dublin at 5100 Upper Metro Place in Dublin, Ohio at 1:00 PM.  Questions? Call Paul Lefkovitz, AAAA Convention Coordinator, at 317-501-3832.

What is Under the Label?

Three condom tins with paper label affixed to two different condom tins. See photos below. I don’t have the courage to soak these. Does anyone have any information on these?  If so, please email me at: norshor@comcast.net.

Thanks!

Steve Cross' Favorite Sign

AAAA member Steve Cross shared a photo of the monumental sign below for AAAA members to enjoy. It is his favorite for obvious reasons. It is an all-original tin litho with embossed letters and original wood frame. It measures 4 feet by 8 feet and came from upstate New York. The sign dates from the 1940’s. It is in beautiful condition!

Steve's cousin went on a road trip from Wichita in search of antiques and to retrieve this sign after spotting it online. Steve eventually bought it from him about 12 years ago, promising that he would keep it in the family, as their last name is Cross. To their knowledge, their family has no connection to the store that originally hung this sign.

The Emergence of Advertising in America

Duke University has made public access available to its digital collection entitled "The Emergence of Advertising in America: 1850-1920".  According to the web site, "This collection presents over 3,300 items relating to the early history of advertising in the United States. The materials, drawn from the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Duke University, provide a significant and informative perspective on the early evolution of this most ubiquitous feature of modern American business and culture. The project was made possible by grant funding to Duke University from the 1998 Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition."

The collection appears to focus on advertisements that appeared in period newspapers and magazines.  However, some examples of packaging art are represented as well. This trove of materials is heavily indexed and searchable.  It could be a significant boon for researchers.  Reference data are provided for each image.    To access this web site, click here

Dating Cigar Tax Stamps

Cigar boxes can often be readily dated though their revenue (tax) stamps. However, a myriad of stamp designs, types and subtypes were issued by the Federal Government over the years. To assist you in your sleuthing, an excellent free resource is available on line. Like much else in the world of vintage cigars, this resource is part of Tony Hyman's extensive on-line museum. Click here to access the article on "Dating Cigar Tax Stamps".
