Hello Paula,

Check out the information below to help you in securing housing at Lakehead!

On-Campus Residence

Living Just Steps Away from Class!

Living in one of our on-campus residence units is highly recommended, especially for first-year students.

It's convenient, safe, and affordable. You'll only be a few steps away from your classes, labs, and student life. It's also a great way to meet other students and build community. Residence students enjoy additional support and security and can take advantage of all social events Residence Services offers.

Off-Campus Accommodations

Secure Accommodations BEFORE You Arrive:

  • There is a housing rental shortage across Canada and that includes Thunder Bay. Houses, apartments, and rooms are very difficult to find. It's strongly advised that you secure your place of accommodation prior to arriving in Thunder Bay.
  • Lakehead University is not responsible for off-campus housing. We will not be able to support your efforts to find an off-campus rental.
  • If you are considering off-campus housing, please note that the average cost of a 1-2 bedroom accommodation is between $1500 - $2000. Rooms within a shared house range from $500- $800.
  • We strongly recommend living in residence at least for the Fall term.

Thunderwolf Tip! Never send any money abroad to landlords until you have been able to verify the rental or have someone verify it for you in person. Most rental listing sites do not "verify" their postings.

Tenant Rights and Rental Awareness

Understand Your Rights as Tenant

Students and landlords need to be aware of their rights and responsibilities before entering into a rental agreement. Please review the following resources for additional information.

Landlord Tenant Board
Ontario Tenants Rights

If you still have questions about off-campus housing, please book a one-on-one appointment with our International Student Advisors.

Short-Term Accommodation

If your accommodations won't be ready or you have not been able to arrange housing before arriving, book temporary or short-term accommodations.

Thunderwolf Tip! Most hotels in Canada require a valid credit card to hold and/or pay for the room. When making your booking remember to ask if they have any special student rates, they may ask you for proof you're a Lakehead student so keep your letter of acceptance handy.
