A Message from our Senior Pastor, Dr. Rodney Navey
“Discipleship from the Pulpit”

God commands His people to make disciples (Matt 28:18-20). We invest our lives in other people encouraging, exhorting, and equipping them to follow Christ. To make disciples, we share how to have a relationship with God (go). Once people begin the relationship with God, we lead them to identify with Him and His church by public profession (baptize). And then we walk alongside them as they grow, mature, and multiply in the faith (teach).

Some things I say over and over again in hopes that someone someday will say, “Pastor Rodney always said . . .” Obviously, Scripture passages would be included, but philosophically we all have important points of emphasis from the Scriptures. For example, I like to say, discipleship happens from the pulpit, in small groups, and in one-on-one meetings. We need all three methods, but think with me about discipleship from the pulpit.

From the pulpit, pastors have a unique opportunity and responsibility to go, baptize, and teach. Another way Paul said it was, “And He gave . . . shepherds and teachers to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Eph 4:11-12). The primary means is teaching the Scriptures (2 Tim 3:16-17).

Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights are our primary ways to make disciples from the pulpit, and we have a few upcoming studies we pray will build you up in the faith and help you in your discipleship journey:

  1. We finish the 2nd part of Exodus (chapters 19-24, God delights in His people) April 14. Remember, we’ve covered Ex 1-18 (God delivers His people) and will return to Exodus later in the year with chapters 25-40; God dwells with His people.
  2. April 21 will mark the beginning of a 3-week series from the book of 2 Thessalonians (one chapter/week). Wouldn’t it be great if there was a book in the Bible that gave us some details about Christ’s return? Well there is; it’s called 2 Thessalonians. The series title is “Worthy of the Kingdom of God.” I hope you will commit this verse to memory: “This is the evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering” (1:5).
  3. On Wednesday nights, we’ll tackle the issue of evil in the world, “The Problem of Evil.” A number of our staff members will take a turn in the rotation of teaching as we think about this topic. The book we’ll use to help us think biblically will be Defeating Evil: How God Glorifies Himself in a Dark World by Scott Christensen.

Christensen in the preface to the book writes, “The book seeks to address the so-called problem of evil, which has proved to be the thorniest issue that the Christian faith has ever faced. The problem is simply stated. If God is supremely good and powerful, then why is there evil in the world?” (pg xiii).

The people of God are called to regularly meet. We meet to worship Him and encourage one another (Heb 10:19-25). We meet also to make disciples. We make disciples who make disciples. My prayer is God will use our meetings for His glory and to grow His kingdom.

Ladies
Dr. Donna Navey, Women’s Director, dnavey@lawndalebaptist.org
It's spring! Every season provides a new perspective as one phase ends and another begins. We understand the importance of change and new beginnings even by observing the wonder of God's creation. Our lives are full of new starts. This is His good gift to us. The most significant new beginning of life is the day a person places their faith in Jesus and surrenders to Him as Lord of all (1 Peter 1:3). God knows that is just the beginning of our transformation. The process of sanctification (made more like Christ) is His plan. In the Lord's last prayer before being arrested, He prayed for us, "Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth" (John 17:17). So, the Word of God is absolutely necessary for your daily transformation. His Truth brings us consistent new beginnings. If you haven't been spending time reading the Word of God, this spring can be a new start! He created new beginnings and offers them daily! “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your (God’s) faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23 ESV).” God bless!

Music & Worship
Noah Darnell, Music & Worship Director, nvdarnell@lawndalebaptist.org
Thank you all for a wonderful time of corporate worship during the Easter season! It is always such a blessing to sing with the family of God during Holy Week. As we continue into the spring, it is my prayer that the victory that we have in Christ’s finished work will continue to be celebrated, and we will continue to marvel at the glory of God. Recently, I have been reading through a collection of Puritan prayers, and wanted to share from a poem titled “God the All”:

O God whose will conquers all,
There is no comfort in anything
              apart from enjoying thee
              and being engaged in thy service;
Thou art All in all, and all enjoyments are what to me
thou makest them, and no more.
I am well pleased with thy will, whatever it is,
or should be in all respects,
And if thou bidst me decide for myself in any affair,
I would choose to refer all to thee,
for thou art infinitely wise and cannot do amiss
as I am in danger of doing.
I rejoice to think that all things are at thy disposal,
and it delights me to leave them there.

This month, as we reflect on what we have just celebrated during the Easter season, may we lift our voices together in praise of our God, whose will conquers all, rejoicing to think that all things are at His disposal, and delighting ourselves in leaving all things – our gifts, our worries, our worship, our lives – there with Him.
