A Beginner's Guide to Native Plants

The trumpet vine is a favorite of gardeners, though it is prone to spread.

As you tend your late spring garden, why not consider using native plants? Most are resilient and easy to care for, and they are uniquely qualified to support local wildlife and host pollinators while adding beauty to your landscape.

Here are five beautiful and easy-to-find native plants that you can try in your garden now, along with a list of native plant nurseries.

The Watershed Connections Program Connects Kids Across Schools to Find Solutions

Students from Philadelphia and Croydon met at historic Glen Foerd for a recent field trip to learn more about their shared watershed.

“Kids really enjoy getting out of the classroom and interacting with nature,” says Kaylyn Brindisi, Community Programs Associate at Heritage Conservancy.

She helps run the Watershed Connections program, linking school students in Quakertown, Tinicum, Croydon, and Philadelphia to learn about their local watershed and share results and findings from up and downstream.

“This type of hands-on learning makes the issues real and understandable in a way that you can’t get from books. We are teaching them the science, but they are also learning to care about the natural world and see local connections — and solutions — to bigger problems.”

Repairs at the Russell-Mandel House

Walls were reinforced as major repairs were made to the interior of the Russell-Mandel House.

A stabilization project at the historic Russell-Mandel House has just been completed. The house is part of Heritage Conservancy's Russell-Mandel Preserve, containing 55 acres of natural space and farmland donated by Bob Russell and Bill Mandel.

Major structural repairs were done to rebuild the foundation, repair the north-facing wall, and replace failing beams. The house will include office space for Heritage Conservancy's land stewardship team and host interns this summer. Work was done with funds from the endowment that Bob and Bill put in place for ongoing care and maintenance when they willed the property to Heritage Conservancy.

Guests at this weekend's Farm to Table fundraiser will have the chance to see the building's updated interior with Rich Zaveta, honored this year with the Heritage Conservancy Business Partners Historic Preservation Award. Rich worked with Heritage Conservancy to make the structural repairs with attention to preserving as many of the original materials as possible.

Mushroom Hike

Heritage Conservancy supporters hunt for mushrooms at Veterans Park.

Heritage Conservancy recently hosted a mushroom hike with Luke Smithson, Head Chef at Jamie Hollander Catering & Events and an amateur field mycologist and community scientist with over 25 years of experience collecting and identifying mushrooms.

Luke led a group of Heritage Conservancy supporters on a foraging walk through Veterans Park in Richland Township. (Heritage Conservancy helped preserve a recent addition to the park). In addition to answering questions and pointing out various types of mushrooms, Luke also explained to the group how fungi as a kingdom interact and form relationships with the other types of life in the forests, and their various roles within the ecosystem.

Meet Kris Kern, Heritage Conservancy's VP and Land Conservation Leader

When Kris is not busy preserving acreage in the region, she enjoys exploring nature with her dog Max.

“I get energized by looking at all of the protected acres throughout Bucks County and even the vulnerable ones that remind you there’s more to do,” says Kris Kern, Vice President at Heritage Conservancy.

Leading land conservation efforts for Heritage Conservancy, Kris brings years of experience from the public sector along with a proactive and collaborative approach that targets desirable land parcels for preservation and works to create partnerships with local municipalities to get things done.

Kris looks to maximize the value of work the organization has already done on conserved properties showcasing successful habitat restoration projects like pollinator meadows, tree plantings, or pond management — and providing landowners with the tools and knowledge to steward their own properties.

Volunteer Work Day

Volunteers from Penn Community Bank recently joined us at Heritage Conservancy's Rossfield Preserve to assist with the installation of a pollinator meadow and the planting of native trees and shrubs. It was part of a region-wide volunteer day for Penn Community Bank employees.

We host volunteer groups from many of our Business Partners. Their labor — along with generous donations and financial support — helps keep this region beautiful, and ensure that it remains a good place to do business.
