Open Classroom Days: Thank You's!
Thank you to the 34 faculty members who participated in Open Classroom Days this fall by visiting classes, opening their classes to colleagues and reflecting on teaching and learning. It has been inspiring to experience, yet again, the supportive collegial environment at Cap, to listen to the dialogues on teaching and learning that have been started and continue to happen as a result of this event. We look forward to continuing to create impact and engagement of even more instructors through Open Classrooms in the future. |
Here are a few nuggets from the best part of Open Classroom Days according to participants:
- The willingness of instructors to share their lessons learned.
- Connecting with colleagues and being intentional about my teaching practice.
- Sharing and collaboration and enhancement of knowledge.
- Listening to other people's perspectives.
- Being able to see how an instructor delivers the classes and how students were reacting to it.
- The opportunity to see how this faculty member scaffolds experiential learning with a highly technical subject.
- Participating in open classes was rewarding.

Bridget McClarty’s open classroom this term was a field trip with her REC 152 class, where colleague and visitor Jeff Anthony got to participate in a shoreline cleanup at the Seymour River Heritage Park and got treated to teachable moments on the salmon life cycle.

Ready for your end-of-term eLearn wrap up? Book a consultation with Mary or Frank to make sure that your gradebook and final exams are ready.

Do you have course sites on eLearn that you’re no longer using? Maybe you had a course restored or a development site that you were using to build out a course that you then imported elsewhere? Contact askit@capilanou.ca to have them deleted before we make the leap to Moodle 4.0. We want to make sure that we’re not duplicating data as we move forward to avoid slowing down the site. For any courses that remain, IT asks that you make sure that files that are already backed up are deleted from the course.

The Spring 2023 eLearn course shells are now available. Educational Developers and Technology Specialists can help you get a jump start on your course development and set your students up for success - https://cte.capilanou.ca/start/consultations/

The CTE video kit is now booking for January 2023. Take it home for a week and test out some upgrades to your video capture setup and you could win a YETI mic! We also have a new self-paced workshop on eLearn called Creating Video for Online Learning. For more information, drop by the CTE or email Edtech.

Did you know that CapU has a policy of not keeping Teams video recordings and Zoom video recordings for more than 120 days? Starting on Dec 20, 2022 your recordings of 120 days or older will begin to be deleted. If you’d like to keep using them, you can download the video as an .mp4 file and upload it to Kaltura to add to your Media. If you would like assistance in downloading your recordings and uploading them to Kaltura – book a consultation with Mary or Frank

Research Participants Wanted!
Brit Paris and Barry Magrill, Educational Developers in the CTE, are conducting a research study to investigate changes to instructional feedback practices in light of lessons learned through emergency remote teaching caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re looking for instructors who have taught continuously between 2019 and now. You’ll be asked some questions about how you provide feedback to students. The interview will take place over Zoom, lasting approximately 1 hour. The research findings will inform programming in the CTE and be presented at conferences and in academic journals.
