Sheena's Story: Future Homeowner
"Experiencing homelessness made me want to own a home because I don't want my kids to ever go through that when they get older. I don't want them to get older and become homeless like we did. I want them to always have a place to come back home to if times get hard." - Sheena, Future Homeowner
Next month – just three years after entering a homeless shelter with her children – Sheena is going to be a homeowner!
Three years ago, Sheena entered Freedom House with her children after going through a divorce and finding herself unable to get approved to rent a place on her own. She was connected with EPH after a few months and moved into a transitional housing unit. Less than a year later, she began renting a house through the EPH long-term supportive housing program. During her time in an EPH home, Sheena maintained stable employment, participated in budget counseling, paid off debt, and built savings. Determined to become a homeowner, she applied to the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership program and received approval soon afterwards.
Sheena has worked tirelessly to not only build a stable future for her family, but also help build the house they will soon be living in. She continued working on the build site long after her required number of volunteer hours were completed for the program, and in just a few short weeks, all her hard work will pay off as she becomes a homeowner!
When asked what she would tell other mothers entering our program, she said, "At times, it may seem tough, but eventually it gets better. It's a good program to be in. I learned a lot related to budgeting. You can talk to a worker about anything and they will help you find resources."
Thank you for supporting EPH and helping make Sheena’s homeownership dream a reality!
