Sheena's Story: Future Homeowner

"Experiencing homelessness made me want to own a home because I don't want my kids to ever go through that when they get older. I don't want them to get older and become homeless like we did. I want them to always have a place to come back home to if times get hard." - Sheena, Future Homeowner

Next month – just three years after entering a homeless shelter with her children – Sheena is going to be a homeowner!

Three years ago, Sheena entered Freedom House with her children after going through a divorce and finding herself unable to get approved to rent a place on her own. She was connected with EPH after a few months and moved into a transitional housing unit. Less than a year later, she began renting a house through the EPH long-term supportive housing program. During her time in an EPH home, Sheena maintained stable employment, participated in budget counseling, paid off debt, and built savings. Determined to become a homeowner, she applied to the Habitat for Humanity Homeownership program and received approval soon afterwards.

Sheena has worked tirelessly to not only build a stable future for her family, but also help build the house they will soon be living in. She continued working on the build site long after her required number of volunteer hours were completed for the program, and in just a few short weeks, all her hard work will pay off as she becomes a homeowner!

When asked what she would tell other mothers entering our program, she said, "At times, it may seem tough, but eventually it gets better. It's a good program to be in. I learned a lot related to budgeting. You can talk to a worker about anything and they will help you find resources."

Thank you for supporting EPH and helping make Sheena’s homeownership dream a reality!

We are excited to share that your gift to EPH will go twice as far this holiday season! Every dollar donated to EPH during our Giving Tuesday campaign will be matched – dollar for dollar - up to $50,000. This means your contribution will have double the impact! Together, we can reach our goal of raising $100,000 during our Giving Tuesday campaign to help families facing homelessness.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement meant to unleash the power of radical generosity around the world. Since its inception in 2012, Giving Tuesday has been celebrated each year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving as a day to encourage people to “do good” and give generously. This year, Giving Tuesday lands on December 3. Learn more at www.givingtuesday.org.

Thank You for Joining Us

We would like to send a huge thank you to everyone who helped make our very first Grace & Gratitude Gathering a success! Earlier this month, over 300 people joined us at Gather on Broadway for a casual evening out that included amazing soup, drinks, live music, raffles, and delicious bake sale items. Many new connections were made and we were thrilled to meet so many new people interested in learning about our mission, and grateful to see our dedicated, long-time supporters there as well. A special thank you goes out to Gather on Broadway, Narrow Bridge Plate & Pour, Plank Road Plate & Pour, The Creamery Downtown, Pat & Paige Acoustic Music, and all of our amazing donors and volunteers for their generosity. Without them, this event wouldn't have been possible. Thank you again to everyone who attended. We hope you had an amazing evening!

We are pleased to be able to share the photos above with you, courtesy of Sofia Vargas, who spent the evening capturing the night in photographs for us. Sofia is the daughter of Lacy Hansen, EPH Office & Volunteer Coordinator, and one of the speakers at our event. Thank you and great work, Sofia!

Meet the EPH Board: Tracie Roberts

St. Norbert College Parish Representative

Q: What motivated you to join the EPH Board of Directors?

A: I was honored to be asked to represent my parish on the board. I am a retired teacher and knew that students in my classes who were experiencing homelessness were challenged to perform, given that the other 17 hours of their life were unpredictable at best. If I could still make a difference for students, I wanted to try.
