FROM PASTOR ANN

Slow Down...

I was hunting for the first couple of weeks of November. When I saw the clouds in this formation, I was reminded of speed bumps on the road that remind us to slow down and pay attention to our surroundings. I was able to enjoy the beauty of creation and give thanks for all that God has done and all that God provides. Have you taken time to slow down to see all the ways that God has provided for you? Have you stopped to give thanks? If not, maybe you want to do that now. Maybe you have, but you can certainly give thanks again. I'm thankful for all of you! May God bless you this Thanksgiving and always!

Bible Study

Jeremiah 33:14-16

14 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

Questions

+What does righteousness mean in this context?

+What might righteousness mean in our context?

+Would we recognize Jesus if he showed up today?

Luke 21:25-36

25 “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves. 26 People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in a cloud’ with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

29 Then he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; 30 as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

34 “Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, 35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Questions

+Verse 33 says that heaven and earth will pass away. What would you like to see pass away/ disappear?

+After the heaven and earth that Jesus references passes away, what do you hope heaven and earth will look like? How can you be part of making that happen?

+What do you wish you would be able to escape from right now?

+What distracts you from the big picture that Jesus offers?

Books have been ordered and will be distributed once in. We have a delivery date of November 29th to December 5.

EVENTS & INFOS

OUTREACH

Hello New Day friends! Hope all is well with you! I wanted to send a brief note about our Facebook Page and/or Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.

Did you know that using social media is a form of outreach for New Day?! That is why it is important that as individuals, you like and share the posts because it brings activity and exposure to the page.

Likewise, when you see a Facebook event, if you could respond with interested, going, can't go it helps the page as well!

The more active our page is, the better, because more people will see it and more people learn about New Day. Can you help us help our social media pages by liking and sharing posts you see and responding to our events?

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! ~Theresa

Our annual Christmas Sock Drive is held during December. Thanks to our congregation in 2023, 278 pairs of socks were collected, plus some underwear and toiletries. With a $250 Thrivent grant, we were able to purchase an additional 330 pairs for a total of 608 pairs. Socks were distributed to the City of Refuge, Promise Ridge, the Haven, and Ruth House. Thank you to all who helped to make this Outreach project a success. The four shelters were very appreciative in receiving them. This year we are focusing solely on socks for women, men, and children.

Help a family break the cycle of hunger and poverty — for good. A cow, a couple of goats, a dozen chicks, two pigs, farming tools, seeds and agricultural training can create a world of opportunity for a family living in poverty. With eggs, milk and meat to eat and sell, and tools and training to increase the harvest, this gift can make all the difference.

This year we are raising money to donate to ELCA Good Gifts. The ELCA World Hunger donates to 89 different countries, so the farm could be in any one of those countries, but likely a country in Africa.

We would like to purchase a family farm for $715! Donate today by mailing a check: New Day Lutheran Church 2184 Channing Way #474 Idaho Falls, ID 83404 or dropping off a check during service or business hours, or donate online. Put ELCA Good Gifts in the memo line.

BRINGING FOOD

Food can be a delightful expression of individuality and

creativity! Whether you choose to bring a simple dish that warms the heart or

an extravagant culinary creation, the important thing is that you feel inspired

to share. There are no strict rules about what must be served; instead, you

have the freedom to decide what resonates with you. The only rule is we can't

save leftovers once they hit the counter.

Your contribution, no matter how big or small, is appreciated!

RCCM NEWS

My Words Can’t Carry All the Praise

Guerrillas of Grace: Prayers for the Battle by Ted Loder

Glorious God,

how curious and what a confession

that we should set aside one day a year

and call it Thanksgiving.

I smile at the presumption,

and hope you smile, too.

But the truth is,

Holy Friend,

that my words can’t carry all the praise

I want them to,

or that they should,

no matter how many trips they make.

So this day,

all is praise and thanks

for all my days.

I breathe and it is your breath that fills me.

I look and it is your light by which I see.

I move and it is your energy moving in me.

I listen and even the stones speak of you.

I touch and you are between finger and skin.

I think and the thoughts are but sparks from the fire of your truth.

I love and the throb is your presence.

I laugh and it is the rustle of your passing.

I weep and your Spirit broods over me.

I long and it is the tug of your kingdom.

I praise you, Glorious One,

for what has been, and is and will ever be:

for galaxy upon galaxy, mass and energy,

earth and air, sun and night,

sea and shore, mountain and valley,

root and branch, male and female,

creature upon creature in a thousand ingenious ways,

two-legged, hundred legged, smooth, furry, and feathery,

bull frogs and platypuses, peacocks and preachers,

and the giggle of it—

and turkeys (especially, this day, the roasted kind, not the flops)—

and families gathered, and the thanking;

the brave, lonely one, and the asking;

the growling, hungry ones, and the sharing.

I praise you, Glorious One,

for this color-splashed, memory haunted,

hope-filled, justice-seeking,

love-grown country

and the labors that birthed it,

the dreams that nurtured it,

the riches that sometimes misguide it,

the sacrifices that await it,

the destiny that summons it

to become a blessing to the whole human family!

O Glorious One,

for this curious day,

for the impulses that have designated it,

for the gifts that grace it,

for the gladness that accompanies it,

for my life, for those through whom I came to be,

for friends through whom I hear and see

greater worlds than otherwise I would,

for all the doors of words and music

and worship through which I pass to larger worlds,

and for the One who brought a kingdom to me,

I pause to praise and thank you

with this one more trip of words

which leaves too much uncarried,

but not unfelt,

unlived, unloved.

Thank you!

The day after the 2024 presidential election, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton reflects on the many expressions of our church being woven together as strands of a large tapestry, even as individually people are experiencing joy or grief. She reminds us that regardless of who is elected president or to other leadership positions in our country, our call to be Christ in the world doesn’t change. “As we're moving through these next years, no matter what happens and what befalls … imagine all of us woven together and in Christ, and we will continue to serve the gospel and to serve the world.” CHECK OUT THE BISHOP'S VIDEO ON FACEBOOK.
