My parents emigrated to the United States in 1963.
When my siblings and I were growing up, our parents would tell us over and over that we must never take for granted the opportunities this nation provides. On Veterans Day, my dad would hang the American flag in our front yard. He would say that displaying the flag was a sign of respect and appreciation towards those who, to paraphrase a famous American document, defend our freedom, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty. To be honest, I didn't understand the importance of those lessons until I was older. Now, I get it.
Last week I was able to honor our veterans alongside FVSD students, staff, and community members. I was moved when listening to students at Oka sing "This Land is Your Land" and when Masuda students extolled the virtues of veterans and first responders so confidently and beautifully. The choir sang, a student played "Taps," and emotions were stirred. I couldn't wait to share them with my children and my parents.
I am proud that Fountain Valley schools continue to celebrate our veterans and express deep gratitude for their sacrifices.
Thank you to all FVSD students and staff, PTA/PTO groups, and community members for creating an opportunity for us to honor our veterans--together.
Respectfully,
Katherine Stopp
