WHAT WE'RE READING

VHS tapes, Iowa, small town life, and missing persons - John Darnielle's second novel combines it all in an atmospheric thriller that explores loss, regret, and loneliness. When Jeremy, a clerk at Video Hut, starts to notice disturbing home movie scenes spliced onto rental tapes, he reluctantly investigates their origins. Lead to a nearby old farmhouse, the story continues to unfold, including more nuanced layers to the mystery. Universal Harvester is a slow-burning, strange tale that will leave you with more questions than answers. Plus, if you listen to the e-audiobook via hoopla, it includes original instrumental music written by Darnielle.

So many patrons remark on their love of the Lucky Day collection that I decided to grab a Lucky Day book for myself. I selected Carrie Soto is Back, and soon found myself seeking out even more of Reid's books. Atmosphere, character, narrative structure, and style in Reid's writing have swept-up this reader! Carrie Soto is Back is a novel of perseverance, bravery, confrontation, self-realization, and love--both in relationships and on the tennis court.

After you check it out, if you haven't already, grab Reid's Daisy Jones And The Six! (And before you crack it, re-listen to some Fleetwood Mac.)
