Have you looked at the color of the sky lately? This is the time of year that our local sunsets, the clouds and the sky colors are absolutely awesome. I see periwinkle skies, dramatic “Maxfield Parrish” clouds and long shadows. This is all fun stuff to paint!
Of course, I exaggerate everything—I even exaggerate the angle of the shadows. Painting the shadows in a landscape gives the painting depth, drama and a focal point.
Look At the video and watch my shadow painting lesson. I start with the sun and determine the direction of the sun/light source. I paint the shadow going away from the sunlight. And then… I exaggerate the angle of the shadows.
Early morning sunlight will cause a long shadow moving away from the light. For sunsets, use a long, low angle light source with warmer colors. Note that the shadows of both are longer than midday or high noon. Noon light makes no shadow. Sunrise and sunset have the longest shadows, moving away from the overall light source.
Your Assignment—After painting several landscapes with the “usual colors” of the sky, white clouds and green earth, try continuing with non-local colors like yellow clouds, violets purple sky and red landscape. Work with any color combination—the constant will be the light source. Note the angle of an imagined beam of light shining on an object, like a tree. The shadow direction continues to go in the same direction… away from the light.
Then exaggerate and exaggerate some more!
