Federal Policy Update: Engaging Every Student All Day, All Year Round

At the Engage Every Student Launch Event in July as part of National Summer Learning Week, U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, Ed. D. announced, "We need bold action, especially for low-income students and students of color…to ensure that more students have access to meaningful, enriching out-of-school programming, not just some of the day, but all day, all year round." This commitment underscores 20+ years of hard work by my friends in Afterschool Alliance, National AfterSchool Association (NAA), National Summer Learning Association and the 50 State Afterschool Network and emphasizes the movement where all partners in communities work together for young people. #engageeverystudent

Welcome Aboard

Monica McQueen has recently joined OregonASK as our new Entrepreneurship Project Director and Community Partnerships Liaison. Most recently, she was the Director of Enrichment Programs at the Dallas Community School, where she helped organize all sorts of expanded learning programs for students and families. Before that, she was a Librarian and Technology Facilitator for several international schools, so she is also bringing her skills in curating and sharing educational resources and information, outreach, game-based learning, educational technology, and training.

At OregonASK, she will be heading up the Entrepreneurship project - mapping organizations and resources around the state that can help promote entrepreneurial mindset and skills in K-12 expanded learning settings and helping bring entrepreneurship curricula and programs to youth and providers. In addition, she will be helping create a toolkit for community organizations and families to provide input to their local schools and districts on what they think youth need for whole-child well-being (like quality afterschool and summer programs).

She is also looking forward to offering PD on game-based learning, growth-mindset through STEM projects, entrepreneurship projects, SEL resources, and team-building with youth in expanded learning settings.

Caleb Green has also joined the team as a Database Assistant supporting several projects this summer before he starts his Junior year this fall. Caleb is an entrepreneur and hard working student, working since he was 11 with the odd jobs around the neighborhood, building those into stable work with established clients. Beyond work, Caleb loves soccer and music. He has been playing defender for nearly 8 years on both indoor and outdoor soccer teams. His passion for music has been fueled by his band program, enjoying the freedom of of jazz, the energy of pep rallies and the structure of symphonic music. He has already picked up several instruments, including the clarinet, bass clarinet, tenor sax and percussion. His biggest hobby is the YouTube channel he runs about Lego, showcasing his collection over the years and making stop motion animations and custom lego creations. We are excited to have Caleb joining the team!
