This month I have two new exercises that will help you become a more rhythmic player and improve your ability to play octaves.

I've been quite busy transcribing a terrific recording of Joe Zawinul's, which is not quite finished. So although there is no new transcription this month, hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

My own practice time has been memorizing and learning Rachmaninoff ('Lullabye', his last piano composition), Chopin (Ballade #1) and Brahms (Intermezzo in B-flat minor).

In order to not get bored working on only one piece, the "Lullaby", I've also begun re-learning Chopin's first Ballade (g minor), with the first 8 pages (of 15) memorized so far.

And I keep hearing in my head Brahms' gorgeous Intermezzo in B-flat minor, which was on the very first classical record ever given to me (Lorin Hollander's Polonaise), but somehow I've never gotten around to learning. So I've begun memorizing it. Stunningly beautiful harmonies - amazing what Brahms did using the cycle of 5ths.

Also last month I addressed two important aspects of piano technique - left hand/right hand coordination & fingered octaves - and have created two exercises to help others improve in those areas.

Bruce Hornsby

In the 2020 documentary about Chuck Leavell, The Tree Man, Bruce Hornsby improvises a short boogie-woogie using an uncommon Left Hand pattern. He describes the right hand part as being played very freely rhythmically, while the left hand is played very solid.

And he says that it's a split-brain challenge that he'd spent six months of hard work trying to perfect.

The first nine bars have fairly normal boogie-woogie licks in the right hand. The next eleven bars have a very unusual right-hand part using odd off-kilter rhythms and chromatic note choices. All the while, his left hand repeats the one-bar boogie-woogie pattern over and over.

Although fairly short - twenty measures - it demonstrates Hornsby's creative approach to boogie-woogie, based upon a left hand pattern that stylistically is a throw-back to the Albert Ammons & Meade 'Lux' Lewis era. I've never heard this left-hand pattern before - a good one to add to one's repertoire.

December's New Exercises - Rhythmic 'Pushes' - Jackson Browne Style

Plus an Exercise in Legato, Fingered Octaves

My second new exercise although short, demonstrates an important technique, i.e., how to play legato octaves by using the 4th finger on the black keys and the 5th finger on the white keys. Although the thumb still 'hops' from note-to-note, by using the 4th finger on the black keys legato octaves can be achieved. This also allows for more control of octaves in general. This technique is not only used in classical performances but also in jazz and rock - from Oscar Peterson to Nicky Hopkins.

You don't have to be from the Deep South to love Gospel piano, nor do you need to belong to any particular religion. All you have to have is a love for wonderful old-time, swinging, uplifting piano-playing.

Leon Russell, Billy Preston, Richard Tee and Ray Charles, some of the greatest keyboard players ever, loved the style and infused their own performances with Gospel licks and rhythms.

Inspired by the wonderful playing of the portly Associate Pastor/Musical Director of my childhood's Baptist Church deep in the piney woods of Mississippi, in recent years I've transcribed and/or arranged a few Gospel classics.
