Air
from Pastor Berg's Monthly Blog
These last few weeks we have had very poor air quality because of forest fires in our area. It is disturbing to have the air so polluted - to have our visibility blocked by smoke from an event outside of our control. We take for granted having clean air to breath, clear air to see, refreshing air to wake up to. In my meditations I was reminded of this blessing from John O'Donohue in his book "To Bless the Space Between us." This is just a part of the poem:
In the News!

FLC member, Audrey Fisher  was featured in Lutheran World Relief's Quilter Spotlight in the Summer 2022 Newsletter for Quilters. Audrey has been supporting LWR since 1945, and since 1979, she has led the FLC quilters to produce more than 18,000 mission quilts to be shipped around the world!

Six runners, including Kaaren Hatlen, Kiersten Eckles, Mary Hatlen, Perry Cole, Emma Hatlen & Michael Hatlen represented FLC in the Rock & Roll Marathon on September 4, in support of Team World Vision's mission to bring clean water to people around the world. Discussion Book: The Midnight Library
by Matt Haig
October 25, 7:00 pm on Zoom
Discussion Leader: TBA
In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig's enchanting blockbuster novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with decisions: Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

A copy of his book is available for checking out in our church Library. Contact Roger Steinke or Clint Bastin for information on discussion group and Zoom link.

Linda Siebert has created a new book for our library, Our Pandemic Story. The book was inspired by and created from the Power Point that Linda prepared for our March 2021 birthday celebration during the pandemic. You may check it out of our library after the official presentation on October 16th, or if you would like your own personal copy, contact Linda Siebert.

The FLC library will sponsor the annual Share Your Favorite Photo contest. All entries will be displayed at our 137th birthday celebration on March 12 2022! Start “clicking” and watch for upcoming details in future Newsletters.

Our library is amazing! Enjoy the fall décor, read magazines and find books or videos.

Check it Out!
The above link will be updated with September's financial information after the Finance Committee is able to review the financial statements at their monthly meeting.
Thank you to all who have continued their faithful giving.
Listed below are ways for you to share with First Lutheran even when you can't attend in person:
* Mail in your checks. We are still doing weekly deposits.
* Set up electronic giving by using the Give Online button at flc.bothell.org, or calling Vanco services at 800-675-7430. Note: there is a one time fee to FLC for the set up of bank to bank transactions. There are approximately 3% transaction fees on all credit card donations, making credit card and debit card giving more effective if combined into a monthly transaction, rather than smaller amounts, weekly.
* Set up one time or auto payments through your bank’s pay service

Thank you for your faithfulness.

Social Ministry Update
October Social Ministries All Church Project
FLC's Social Ministries Committee is asking for your help with supporting Compass Housing Alliance with a Top Five Drive. Items collected during this drive will be going to the Hygiene Center in Pioneer Square and to different area shelters.

For over 100 years, Compass Housing Alliance has been meeting the needs of the community across the Puget Sound region by providing 24-hour enhanced emergency shelter programs for those experiencing homelessness and housing instability.

Donations can be placed in the Caring Corner's collection bin (next to the grocery cart).
FLC's Social Ministries Committee is co-sponsoring this book talk. Unsettling Truths outlines Christian doctrines from 300 AD through to the present, that enabled and even encouraged the genocide and enslavement of native people in Africa and the Americas. Mark Charles is a Christian theologian, scholar and Native American, he intertwines history with his personal story to make a heartfelt appeal to Christians to understand our history and embrace the roots of our faith.

Scrip is a Great Way to Increase Your Giving
with Purchases You'd Make Anyway!
Proceeds from FLC's Scrip program recently paid for the shipment of quilts and school/health kits to Lutheran World Relief. Your purchases really do make a difference!

Purchase your Scrip gift cards on Sunday morning before and after worship or this is an excellent time to set up Shop with Scrip and Presto Pay for instant Scrip purchases and redemption on your smart phone. This is a super easy way to continue to support FLC's Scrip program. (See below for more information.)

If you are unable to attend worship or purchase Scrip online, you may mail a check to FLC Scrip, attention Gordy Phelps, with a note of what scrip cards you wish to purchase, and he will mail the cards back to you.

We have several other opportunities for earning money while you shop, for FLC's many social ministry programs:

2. Sign up for Amazon Smile and name First Lutheran Church as your charity. Every time you shop with Amazon Smile FLC receive .05% of your purchase price. You can still use Amazon Prime. Get your kids to sign up, too! In the 3rd quarter of 2021, your Amazon Smile purchases earned $84 for Social Ministries!

3. Link your Fred Meyer rewards card to their Community Rewards program for First Lutheran Church. All of your purchases will result in a quarterly donation to FLC.

If you have questions email Gordy Phelps.
Living Stones Project
Each week we will include a Living Stone created by one of our congregation members in the Weekly News. Living Stones are also displayed in the Landing. We encourage all congregation members to get creative and share their faith with the community. Contact the Education Committee for more information. Here is the first Living Stone:

God created everything.
How? I don’t know.
God is still creating. I am called to help.

God loves me.
Why? I don’t know.
God proves that love for me through Jesus Christ.

God comes to me through the Holy Spirit.
How does God come to others? I don’t know.
God loves all creation, all are God’s children.

The best way I can show my love for God is by loving God’s children and creation.
Do I do that? Not always.
God still loves me and forgives me.

God calls me to be part of the Church.
Will that continue to look like what it always has? Probably not.
But God promises to be there with us as we figure it out.

August Council Meeting Notes
At our September council meeting, we had our calendars out to save the date for the amazing annual youth auction coming up on February 5, 2023! We hope you will also save the date for great food, lovely auction items, and even better company!

We are excited to announce Derrick StaRosa has been elected to a 2-year term on the endowment committee. We thank him for his service in this capacity. We are still looking for one more person to serve on the endowment committee.

Pastor Berg reported on the adult education survey. He appreciated everyone who participated. We went over the results and read all your comments. This will help guide Pastor Berg in future planning for the adult education hour.

The parking lot has been repaved (as of September 30). Have you seen our newish signs that say, No Public Parking? These signs have alleviated the problems of a significant number of cars parked for days at a time, and cars parking to use nearby businesses, causing parking issues for our own members and preschool parents. If you hear of an event happening near the church that could benefit from the use of our parking lot, please let them know we do accept building & use applications for parking lot usage. We are happy to open our lot to our community, they just need to ask!

Happy Fall!

The first week of October is Junk Mail Awareness Week. Did you know that the average American gets at least 46 pounds of junk mail annually? Over 100 billion pieces of junk mail are delivered in the U.S. every year! The Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Advice website at: https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-stop-junk-mail puts you in control of how much junk mail you get and, in turn, helps you make a positive impact on the environment by saving trees, water, energy and all other effects from the production to the delivery of junk mail. Check out the site and opt out.

World Habitat Day is celebrated annually on the 1st Monday of October. The 2022 theme for October 3rd’s day of recognition is "Mind the Gap. Leave No One and Place Behind." This theme considers the issues of the growing inequality and challenges in cities, town, villages and in all other populated areas. These issues have been exacerbated by COVID-19, climate change and human conflicts.

World Animal Day is celebrated annually on October 4th. This day was established as an international day of action for animal rights and welfare. October 4th is the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment.

October 5th is Energy Efficiency Day, recognized annually on the 1st Wednesday in October. Over 900 local governments, universities, organizations, corporations, and utilities across the U. S. are participating in this day to promote the multiple benefits of energy efficiency. We can each do our part by assessing our homes for energy efficiency, including the following: check for air leaks around windows, attic access and exterior doors; examine door seals or gaskets on appliances such as the dryer, refrigerator, freezer and oven; purchase ENERGY STAR appliances, electronics and light bulbs; check insulation levels in basements, crawl spaces and attics; use a programmable thermostat; and unplug electronics when not in use to prevent phantom loads. And, saving energy has the added benefit of a cost savings as well!
