Headshot of Dr. Ann Cook

Dr. Ann Cook

School of Earth Sciences

Dr. Ann Cook, professor and director of undergraduate studies in the School of Earth Sciences, studies frozen methane below the seafloor to understand how it fits into the carbon cycle. Although her primary field area is the northern Gulf of Mexico, her research has taken her around the world to offshore India, New Zealand, the Norwegian Sea, the Barents Sea, offshore Australia, the Arctic, and the South China Sea. Dr. Cook teaches courses on geophysics, earth sciences careers, and a new class, Disaster Movies (ES1101), where she explains the correct and incorrect science in natural disaster movies -- no prior experience needed, in any topic. Students in earth sciences pursue research in many areas including water science, volcanology, geophysics, and paleontology. Read Dr. Cook's responses to a Q&A. Visit Dr. Cook's OSU web page. Be Prepared for Winter Break

As we approach winter break, Willie J. Young, Sr. Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement (OCCSE) has tips to prepare you for whatever your break has in store!

  • Ensure your apartment is secure. Double-check windows and doors, unplug electronics, lock up valuables, and set lights on timers. Notify your property manager or a trusted neighbor you will be away. Free window and door alarms are available in Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement's office, suite 3106 of the Ohio Union.
  • Avoid frozen or burst water pipes. Set your thermostat to at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit before leaving and don’t turn off the heat. Ensure the heat reaches your pipes by opening cabinet doors under sinks. If you forget to turn up your thermostat before leaving, notify your property owner.
  • Be sure your car is packed with essentials before the cold weather hits! Supplies like an ice scraper, shovel, and kitty litter can help. Don't forget to check your tires and fluids.

For questions, visit the OCCSE website, call 614-292-0100, email offcampus@osu.edu, or stop by their office in suite 3106 of the Ohio Union! Enjoy your winter break!

Dr. Sara Butler, professor in the Department of History, will examine crime and punishment in the Middle Ages and talk about why people today want to believe the medieval world was so violent. This talk will analyze how medieval communities worked together to catch murderers, and in doing so will touch on the foundations of the modern legal system.  Read more and RSVP.
