Highlights from the 6th Annual UCSF School of Medicine Clinical Microsystems Clerkship Health Systems Improvement Symposium
MS2 Alyssa Rivera, MS2 Amritpal Singh, and Sara Newmann, MD, MPH, in conversation with MS2 Bagieng Keophimphone, during the poster session at the UCSF School of Medicine Clinical Microsystems Clerkship Health Systems Improvement Symposium.
As the voices filling the Mission Bay Conference Center slowly simmered to a hush, UCSF School of Medicine Vice Dean for Education and newly appointed Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Dr. Catherine Lucey, began her speech by saying, “Love is in the air here.” Although an unexpected opener to the sixth annual UCSF School of Medicine Clinical Microsystems Clerkship Health Systems Improvement Symposium, which celebrates UCSF medical students’ quality improvement work in their first year and a half of medical school, she went on to explain her unique theme. “Quality is love. You have to be able to love the patients who receive the care that we give, so that the next people have better care.”

As part of their Clinical Microsystems Clerkships (CMC), this past year, 164 UCSF medical students divided between 31 teams carried out projects to improve the quality of patient care across multiple UCSF Health sites and affiliates including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) and the San Francisco VA (SFVA) Medical Center.

Education Program Updates
New, Expanded San Joaquin Valley PRIME+ Baccalaureate/MD Program Launches
After nearly two years of cross-campus collaboration, UCSF, UCSF Fresno, and UC Merced launched the San Joaquin Valley (SJV) PRIME+ Baccalaureate/MD program. SJV PRIME+ is a multi-campus baccalaureate/MD pathway program designed to recruit, train, and graduate 21st Century physician leaders committed to serving the San Joaquin Valley. Starting in 2023, and in every year thereafter, 12 medical students from the Valleyeducated in the Valley, will graduate as physicians in the Valley to pursue residency training.

In anticipation of the program launch, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the national accrediting body for American and Canadian medical schools acknowledged UCSF's proposal to add UC Merced as its third regional campus. Regional campuses are instructional sites distinct from the central/administrative campus where students spend one or more complete curriculum years.

Margo Vener, MD, MPH, Professor of Family and Community Medicine at UCSF, will serve as Interim Director of Undergraduate Medical Education at the UC Merced regional campus. Dr. Vener will be responsible for continuing the momentum of establishing the medical education program and curriculum at UC Merced. A national search to fill the role at UC Merced will be started soon.
