LENT 2024: GRATITUDE AND JOY!
This year we have two tracks we’re following for Lent. The first track is GRATITUDE. Everyone is encouraged to learn and begin a spiritual practice of gratitude – the UTO way - making a commitment to notice and offer thanks for our blessings. See what they say about this practice and the benefits of this to our bodies and souls HERE. UTO Blue boxes are available in the Parish Hall. The blue boxes are a concrete way to make small offerings of thanks and the proceeds benefit Episcopal missions around the world.

LENT & PRAYER RESOURCES
As Valori†, mentioned in last week's E-News, we asked #WhyEmmanuel at our annual meeting in 2023. This year, we dig into the answer with the second track for Lent--Joy, the basic attitude of sharing the Good News of our faith. There is so much to love about belonging at Emmanuel and so much to be joyful about being in The Episcopal Church. Lent begins Ash Wednesday on February 14 and we invite you to dig deeper into your faith and here are some resources.
If you are looking for something to read, Deacon Jerre recommends: Creating a Life with God: The Call of Ancient Prayer Practices by Daniel Wolpert and/or Paths to Prayer: Finding Your Own Way to the Presence of God by Patricia D. Brown.
If you want an online option, The Episcopal Church, through Episcopal Relief and Development is offering daily Lenten Meditations. Click here. Another option is to pick up a Forward Day by Day booklet in the narthex. Day by Day is a daily devotional that comes in print or a podcast or you can read it online.
And below read about an in person option, Episcopal 101...

EPISCOPAL 101
Every Wednesday evening during Lent, Valori† will have Episcopal 101 Classes. If you'd like to know more about the Episcopal Church, beliefs, traditions, history this is for you. These classes are also necessary if you would like to be confirmed or received into The Episcopal Church.
Classes will be WEDNESDAYS at 5-6 pm February 21 & 28 and March 6 & 13. They will be both in person and on Zoom. Please contact Valori† for more details or if you have questions. The Zoom link is included on the calendar entry for these events on our website.

LOOKING FOR ECM AMBASSADORS!
Did you know? Episcopal City Mission (ECM) allows each Episcopal Church in the diocese to have two representatives on their board as Ambassadors. Kathy Tate has recently agreed to be one of those ambassadors, and we're asking if anyone would like to join her!
The short answer to what does an ambassador does is advocacy and connection. Click here to download a description. If you feel called to being part of this important ministry for youth in detention, please contact Deacon Jerre. ECM is holding their Annual Meeting at Emmanuel Feb. 29 at 6 pm.

SOPRANO JULIA BULLOCK
We're thrilled to report that former member, Julia Bullock, received a GRAMMY for Best Classical Solo Vocal category for Walking in the Dark.
Marking Bullock’s solo album debut, the recording has already been recognized with both Opus Klassik and Edison Klassiek awards, as well as being featured in the New York Times’s “Best Classical Music Tracks of 2022.”
Julia's husband, Christian Rief, collaborated on the album. Julia sang in Emmanuel's children's choir and is the daughter of Allyce Bullock, member at St. John's Tower Grove.

BRACKET TIME!!
Emmanuel is encouraging us to try another type of March Madness this year. Two Episcopal priests began Lent Madness in 2010, so many of you have had a chance to participate in previous years. The set up is similar to NCAA basketball. 32 Saints begin the contest. Those are narrowed into the Saintly 16, then the Elate 8, the Faithful 4, and finally one saint is crowned with the Golden Halo.
Reasons to play:
- You love Wordle but want something easy!
-
It's a fun way to learn more about our saints.
- Your chances of winning are MUCH higher than March Madness!!
We encourage ALL ages to give it a try. There will be a large bracket poster in the Parish Hall (with smaller take home copies) and weekly updates emailed to you. Kids will be hearing about the saints during some of our formation sessions.

This week, we report that Sam won the Gingerbread House contest done in late December. Hearing of the need, Sam donated the cash prize he won to Emmanuel's Food Center. THANK YOU, Sam!
