Village of Robbins Celebrates $23M Stormwater Park, Advancing Flood Relief and Community Revitalization
The Village of Robbins recently celebrated the opening of the Robbins Stormwater Park and Midlothian Creek Restoration Project, a $23 million initiative aimed at alleviating chronic flooding while enhancing community recreation and economic opportunities. This project, led by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) with federal and state support is setting the stage for recreational and economic growth in the area.
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, Governor Pritzker, President Toni Preckwinkle, MWRD officials, and local leaders joined Robbins Mayor Darren Bryant at the ribbon-cutting event, emphasizing the park's significance for reducing flood insurance needs and protecting over 1,300 parcels from the 100-year floodplain.
"This $23 million stormwater park is a transformative milestone for our Village, addressing critical flood relief while creating vibrant community spaces that will serve our residents for generations to come. This project not only provides practical solutions to longstanding flooding issues but also offers opportunities to grow our local economy through recreational and entertainment ventures. Thanks to the unwavering support of the MWRD, the Governor's Office, Cook County, and all our dedicated partners, we are taking a major step toward a safer, stronger, and more resilient future for our community," said Village of Robbins Mayor Darren Bryant.
SSMMA would like to extend our congratulations to the Village of Robbins and its partners who have completed the first phase of this long-awaited project. Read more.

Rep. DeLuca’s Juvenile Gun Safety Measure Supported by SSMMA Committee
This week SSMMA’s Public Safety Committee, led by Markham Mayor Roger Agpawa, convened to discuss key issues affecting the safety and welfare of municipalities in the Southland. A significant focus of the meeting was HB 990, sponsored by Representative Anthony DeLuca (D-80), which seeks to tackle the increasing number of gun-related incidents involving minors. This legislation proposes structured intervention programs aimed specifically at young offenders who have been involved in multiple firearm incidents.
Bishop Ronnie White, Director of Juvenile Services and Police and Fire Chaplain for the City of Chicago Heights highlighted the importance of implementing proactive measures to prevent recidivism and support rehabilitation for youth. White advocated for a comprehensive approach to juvenile justice, emphasizing the integration of mental health services, family engagement, and educational support to effectively reduce crime rates.
With strong backing from the Public Safety Committee, HB 990 is poised to advance to SSMMA’s Legislative Committee and the full Board. This progression reflects the committee's recognition of the legislation's potential to address the complexities surrounding gun violence and create safer communities for children and residents alike. SSMMA would like to thank Representative DeLuca for his initiative and its holistic approach, which aims to establish a supportive framework for at-risk youth, ultimately reducing the number of juvenile repeat gun offenders and saving lives.
