Gospel Reflection

Editor's Note: Next weekend's Gospel reading will be John 15: 9-17 where Jesus tells us all about love and joy - JCO

Joy-Full image

by Brent Kercheville

I want us to turn our attention to John 15:11 because this is the thesis statement for this paragraph. “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” This is a huge statement. What Jesus is teaching these apostles is the key to them having joy to the fullest. Isn’t this the high pursuit of the world? Everyone is looking to maximize their joy, happiness, and satisfaction. Yet the scriptures describe for us how to have full joy in life. So let us listen to the words of Jesus as we read John 15:9-17 considering how Jesus is offering us full joy for our lives.

As The Father Has Loved Me, So I Have Loved You (15:9)

This truly is a mind-blowing declaration that we need to take a moment to consider. Think about for a moment how deep the Father’s love is for the Son. I believe this is another reason why the second person of the Godhead is given the term “Son.” Not only is Christ the Son because he shows subordination to the will of the Father, but the Father and Son terminology pictures a depth of love that is inexpressible. Do not think that because the apostles are the audience for Jesus at this moment that this statement does not apply to us. In a few paragraphs Jesus will pray to the Father desiring that those who will believe in Jesus through the word of the apostles will know that Jesus loves us as the Father has loved him (John 17:21,23). This is why the apostle Paul would write to the Ephesians telling them “to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19). What love Jesus has for his disciples!  READ MORE

Help End Plastics Pollution This Earth Day 🌎

The U.S. produced 42 million metric tons of plastic waste in 2016. That’s equivalent to the weight of 210,000 blue whales. Recycling systems are not equipped to process this enormous output. Instead, much of our plastic trash pollutes waterways and food chains, endangering ecosystems and human health.

As Christians, we are responsible for the care of our neighbors and our common home.We must stop the toxic cycle of plastic production and pollution. Join the Jesuit Conference Office of Justice and Ecology and Ignatian Solidarity Network in asking the Senate to pass the Break Free from Plastics Pollution Act.

If enacted, this legislation would require plastic producers to take responsibility for plastics pollution, moving the burden of proper plastic disposal from consumers to manufacturers. It would also cut single-use plastic production 50% by 2050 and ban certain non-recyclable or toxic plastic materials. The bill also targets industrial pollution emitted during the plastic manufacturing process, restricting permits for new plants and setting aggressive water and air emissions standards on existing facilities.

By curbing plastics pollutants throughout the supply chain, the Break Free from Plastics Pollution Act would build healthier communities and cleaner environments. Tell your Senator to reduce plastic pollution today.

There is a story many years ago of an elementary teacher. Her name was Mrs. Thompson. And as she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. And Teddy could be unpleasant.

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X's and then putting a big F at the top of his papers.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child's past records and she put Teddy's off until last.

However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy's first grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners ... he is a joy to be around."

His second grade teacher wrote, "Teddy is an excellent student, well-liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle."
