National Museum of African American History (NMAAHC) Opens Collection to Honor the Contributions of African Americans

Carter G. Woodson established Black History week in 1926 as an effort to promote and encourage Black history to be taught across the country and in public schools.

Woodson’s efforts led to events lasting more than the designated week. It was so successful that in 1976, President Gerald Ford decided to make it not just a week, but an whole month!

Black History Month is a special time to recognize and honor the amazing contributions that African Americans have made throughout history. It's also a time to learn, celebrate, and appreciate the rich culture and achievements of the Black community.

The theme for this year is “African Americans and the Arts.”

Through Smithsonian's Open Access initiative, students are invited to explore various photos from the NMAAHC collection.

WVNCC’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee is pleased to share this and other resources throughout February.
