CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE

Regular attendance is a must for our Adult Education programs (ABE/GED/ESL/NEDP). You need a certain number of hours to accomplish your objectives and testing goals. Those hours should accumulate over the semester with regularity.

2023 will start with a new attendance policy!

As part of our classroom etiquette, please continue letting your instructors or your Student Navigators know when you cannot join your class. Please, make a big effort to go to class even if you are tired after a long day’s work.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE DAY

U.S. Gingerbread House Day is on December 12! Whether you're a cookie-building expert or your baked house falls apart as soon as you get the third wall glued on with icing, we can all agree the best part of building a gingerbread house is eating the sweet treat when we're done!

Building a Gingerbread house is a fun family activity during the Winter break!

NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

This commemorative month is celebrated during the month of November. It aims to provide a platform for Native people in the United States of America to share their culture, traditions, music, crafts, dance, and concepts of life. This gives Native people the opportunity to express to their community, both city, county, and state officials their concerns and solutions for building bridges of understanding and friendship in their local area.

OPINION CORNER:

Climate Change Emergency Plan

Climate change impacts our weather systems. We have more severe hurricanes, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and snowstorms. Are you prepared for a weather emergency? Do you have your Emergency Plan and an Emergency Supply Kit? Here is an example:

Emergency Plan:

  • Stay informed – have alerts on your phone
  • Charge all cell phones
  • Collect copies of important documents (passports, driver’s licenses, etc.) and store them in a safe dry place.
  • Develop an evacuation route, plan your transportation, and identify a safe place to stay (friends or family outside your local community).
  • Make plans for your pets – bring them inside if not evacuating.
  • If it is winter, have adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm

 Emergency Supply Kit:

  • Flashlight and batteries
  •  First Aid kit
  •  Phone charger
  •  3-day supply of non-perishable food and a manual can opener
  • Personal care items – ex. Soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, masks
  • Water – one gallon per person per day (3-day supply)
  • Clean clothes (3-day supply)
  • Trash bags
  • Pet food – if you have a pet

COVID AND FLU UPDATES

Chesapeake College continues to have a mask-optional school policy. Continue to wear a mask if wearing one helps you feel safe. Remember it is the flu season as well as the holiday season. Get a flu shot and get boosted against COVID-19. Although you may have been vaccinated, the omicron variant can still infect you. Staying up to date on your COVID-19 booster shots can reduce your risk of severe illness and hospitalization. Keep safe as you shop during the holidays. For more information: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html/
