Serving as God’s Messengers

In this week’s message, Pastor David included the following Mark Twain quote, “Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy, you must have somebody to divide it with.” While reflecting on this quote, we must remember that Jesus is always with us to share our joys, sorrows, memories, anxiety, grief, and gratitude.

Do we share our joys with him, or do we primarily rely on him when things are not going as we had envisioned? Sometimes life is hard, and if we are honest with ourselves, we might acknowledge that, at times, we could have been a better Christian. So, what does being a better Christian mean?

In a recent message, Pastor Rick Warren described that being better Christians entails learning, not on our own, but from other people. For example, we can only learn forgiveness in relationships. We can’t learn forgiveness on our own. Nor can we learn loyalty, trust, love, kindness, faithfulness, graciousness, or unselfishness without others.

The most important things we need to learn in life require us to be in relationships with other people. If we want to do better and be better, as Pastor David reminds us, we must seek, build, foster, and nurture relationships and continually learn from and through others.

God wired us to depend on each other, and the best place to do this is in God’s family, where we learn by being connected to the body of Christ. Church is the home we seek, where two or more gather. Let’s do our own special work to spread the joy of church by reaching out to others and serving as God’s angels and messengers.
