As we enter the month of November and approach Thanksgiving, I am reminded of how thankful I am for the tremendous progress our strategic coordination and inquiry teams have made.

To date, our three inquiry teams have started to merge on a regular basis to analyze the data collected throughout various events and surveys over the past six months.  Team members have also started to go through current research around each topic and identify the areas they want to learn more about and what additional information they need to collect from the stakeholders in our school community.  Once a month, each team shares their progress and findings with the Strategic Coordination Team.  Based on the information shared last month, I am excited to learn about what direction the teams are going based on their latest meeting.

The first part of our District’s theme this year, “This is Chagrin” allows us to embrace our core values, beliefs, and strong traditions– to recognize what matters most to our students, staff, parents, alumni and school community.  The second part of our theme, “Write the Story,” allows us not only to find and share the stories that define our past, but also begin to write the introductions for our future.

Focusing on high-quality learning experiences, student and staff well being, and strategic resourcing allows us to reflect on the lessons learned over the past few years, and imagine the possibilities for the future.  Most importantly it sets our direction as we begin to write the next chapter of our story.

One of the primary functions of the Board of Education is to adopt policies that ensure that the District is compliant with state and federal law. Policy requirements and the laws that govern them, are constantly changing. Adopted policies act as an operator’s manual of sorts. From required student services, such as new dyslexia identification standards, to strict accounting guidelines, policies guide all aspects of District operations. New laws are passed that require the Board to update its policies, and those changes are then incorporated into District regulations, manuals, and handbooks. Although a very dry subject, policy is the framework of public education in Ohio.

This year the Board is embarking on a complete compliance review and restatement of our policies.  This is a huge effort, and it requires support and input from our central office, building leadership, staff, and legal counsel. While not the most exciting of topics for a Super News update, it is the kind of behind-the-scenes compliance work that ensures that our students continue to receive the high-quality learning experience that we expect in Chagrin.

The District's 2022-23 school year theme is “This is Chagrin…Write the Story.”

The work we are doing this year centers around our school community sharing their stories and experiences to write a narrative for what we collectively believe and want for our students. This is a perfect statement that outlines what we hope to accomplish through the strategic planning process. Core values and beliefs are the foundation of strategic planning and establishing the culture of an organization. It is what makes school a special place to learn, work, and succeed, and a school community a special place to live. Are we ready to educate the next generation of students? How will the story we write this year impact their story in the future?

Throughout the school year, our students, staff, parents/guardians, and community will be encouraged to help “write the story of Chagrin Falls Schools” in numerous ways. From participating in the creation of the District’s strategic plan to actually being an author highlighting the commitment and dedication to academic excellence and preparation of our students for the world after graduation.

As a District, we look toward the future and ask all of you to engage with us as we help write Chagrin’s story for many years to come.
