"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends,” John 15:12-13.

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

As we sang What a Friend We Have in Jesus, I wondered how many of us think of Jesus as our friend. While we know he is integral to our lives, do we consider him a friend?

Many Christians embrace the spiritual concept of having Jesus as a friend as it signifies a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus, where we view him not only as a historical figure or a religious icon but also as a close companion and confidant.

Let’s reflect on some aspects of what it means to have Jesus as a friend. First, there is intimacy. Just like with any friendship, having Jesus as a friend implies deep intimacy and closeness. It involves sharing one's thoughts, feelings, and struggles with him, knowing he understands and empathizes with us.

Our friendship with Jesus is built on trust. We trust that Jesus loves us unconditionally, forgives our shortcomings, and always has our best interests at heart. Friends often turn to each other for advice and guidance; the same applies to having Jesus as a friend. We seek Jesus' wisdom and guidance through prayer, Scripture, reflection, and trusting that he will lead us on the right path.

Having Jesus as a friend means never feeling alone. We believe Jesus is always with us, walking alongside us as a constant companion through life's joys and challenges. Friends support each other in times of need, and we rely on Jesus for strength and comfort during difficult times. We trust in his promise to never leave or forsake us. So, yes, we absolutely have a friend in Jesus!
