Dear Coastliners,

Tomorrow is Denim Day!!

We invite and encourage you to join with others who "will wear jeans with a purpose, support survivors, and educate themselves and others about all forms of sexual violence."

Please consider participating as individuals and through your departments by:

  • Wearing jeans on Wednesday, April 24th as a visible sign of protest about sexual violence and to come together as a community.
  • Change your zoom background!
  • Post a picture (or group of pictures) to social media to support #denimday2024 and follow @coastline_oc on Instagram to see Coastline’s participation in Denim Day.
  • Join us at 12pm in the Student Success Center Lobby for a picture.

WHY WE WEAR DENIM

Denim Day was sparked by a 1998 Italian Supreme Court ruling where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the survivor was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the survivor. Denim has become a symbol of protest of erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. There is no excuse and never an invitation to rape. While we use this month to bring awareness to the issue of sexual violence, we know that our students, families, and colleagues are survivors every day. Please continue to use your voice to assist in ending rape culture.
