Remembrance Day

November 8 is National Indigenous Veterans Day. This is an opportunity to recognize the military service and sacrifices made by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. This day of acknowledgement was established in 1994.

More than 12,000 Indigenous Peoples served in the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Korean War. This commitment spans over 200 years of military services.


Armistice Day or “Remembrance Day” as it has come to be known, originated following the end of the First World War. The Armistice agreement was signed between Germany and the Allied Forces in Paris on Monday, 11 November 1918 at 0500 hours. The ceasefire went into effect at 1100 hours the same morning. The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.


Today, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of all those who have fought and died in war, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Five Stars Restaurant Training

We are currently recruiting participants for the Five Stars: Restaurant Training and Empowerment Program Cohort 4- starting on November 28, 2022!


This is a 6 week paid program (4 weeks in class and 2 week placement). In this program participants will learn employability skills, life skills, and receive certifications in:

YMCA: Power of Trades

The YMCAHBB is excited to announce a new training program for newcomers wishing to explore and secure employment in the trades.


The Power of Trades Program (PTP) provides pre-employment strategies, labour market research, individualized employment plans, certifications such as First Aid, Working at Heights, Customer Service Excellence, with the possibility of other trade specific certifications during 4 Weeks of IN CLASS training.


Following the training, Participants will be connected with a 3 week placement or a pre apprenticeship in the trade sector of their interest.

Office Administration Career Discovery

In this course, participants will gain an entry-level understanding of the professions available to them through interactive talks by administrative professionals working in the field. Participants will learn about the type of work and education pathways needed to pursue these careers. Explore careers in Office Administration will look at various roles including that of: Office Receptionists, Office Administrators, Office Management, Legal Office Administration, Medical Office Administration, Executive Office Administration, Records Keeping, and General Office Administration.

Delivery: In-person

Location: Mission Services (196 Wentworth Street North)

Dates: November 8 to December 15, 2022

Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays

Time: 11:30 am to 1:30 pm

 

Careers in Automotive Services

In this course, you will learn about oil changes and the inner workings of an engine, changing tires and properly torquing wheels, checking filters and fluid levels, inspecting brakes and suspension components, proper terminology of tools, Ontario Health and Safety overview, as well as some soft skills in computers. Upon completion of this course, the skills learnt will assist you in finding an entry-level position at an automotive service garage.

Delivery: In-person

Location: Stoney Creek Campus

Dates: November 10 to December 15, 2022

Mohawk College is looking for mentors for the Newcomer Mentorship Program. Volunteer mentors share their knowledge and experience in a specific field with their mentees for a 3-month period. During this time, mentors have the opportunity to develop their coaching and cross-cultural communication skills while supporting the integration of newcomer professionals into the labour market.

Humanities Career Apprenticeship Program

As a local employer, you can receive $10,000 to hire a McMaster Humanities graduate! The Humanities Career Apprenticeship Program connects new graduates from the Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University with reputable Hamilton-based employers like you. Students will gain an opportunity to complete meaningful projects in a work environment that fosters learning, networking and development, and you will receive financial support to access a highly motivated and skilled talent pool.

 

In 2022/2023, the third year of the program, we aim to provide funding for up to 15 positions. The employer recruitment process will begin in December 2022, and apprentices will start in their first career roles in early May 2023.

3 Reports That Caught Our Eye the Week of Nov. 6, 2022

Labour Force Survey, October 2022 (Statistics Canada)

Employment rose by 108,000 (+0.6%) in October, recouping losses observed from May to September. The unemployment rate held steady at 5.2% in October.


CME 2022 Labour and Skills Survey (Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters)

Manufacturers are in hiring mode, but face many barriers to attracting and retaining talent. According to this survey, one barrier stands out above the rest: difficulty finding candidates with the right technical skills.


Out of Service: Hospitality sector sheds employees of all ages during COVID-19 while migration to tech surged (Angus Reid)

Data show an 18% decline in the number of workers in the service sector over the past two and a half years. However, while the service sector has experienced significant attrition, a corresponding boost is noted for the tech industry.

The Future of Work – What trends will HR see in 2023?

Rising inflation, scarce and increasingly more expensive talent, and global supply chain volatility means organizations are facing challenging times ahead.


Technological research and consulting firm Gartner surveyed 850 HR leaders, and uncovered the five main priorities they’ll be focusing on as they head into 2023.

The top five priorities of 850 HR leaders

  1. Leader and manager effectiveness – A top priority for 60% of HR leaders.


The most common challenge that emerged was leadership development. 24% of HR leaders say their current approach doesn’t prepare leaders for the future of work.


2. Organizational design and change management – A top priority for 53% of HR leaders.


Employee fatigue emerged as a common challenge, with 45% saying their employees are fatigued from all the change.
