Even though the first official day of summer isn't until June 20th, we're already having hot weather in Georgia. This is a good time to remind ourselves how deadly keeping your dog unattended in your car can be, even for a few minutes.

If you see a dog locked in a hot car, what can you do? There are only 15 states with "Good Samaritan" laws that permit a person to break into someone's car to rescue a pet - Georgia is NOT one of them. Georgia law does provide immunity to law enforcement who damage cars when rescuing people or pets, so in Georgia, call 911 for assistance.

While waiting for help, take down the car's make, model and tag number and if there are businesses nearby, notify management to make a store-wide announcement to try to locate the owner.

Reading your dog's body language

"But he was wagging his tail before he bit me!"

Many dog bites could be prevented if humans were better at reading dog body language. Contrary to popular belief, a wagging tail does not always mean a dog is happy. The position and speed of the tail wag, in addition to the dog's posture, ears, eyes and mouth can tell you volumes about whether the dog is happy, fearful or highly aroused.

Most animals are masters at reading body language. Humans also have this ability, but we tend not to utilize this skill because we rely so much on verbal communication.

Are dogs colorblind?
How do dogs see colors?
How dogs "see the world" is a question that has been pondered by many a dog owner. Can dogs see colors?" Or do they see the world in black and white?

Stanley Coren, PhD and author of How to Speak Dog, notes in Psychology Today that dogs do see colors, but not like humans do.
