NEW: Artistic Talk - Gregg Deal

On behalf of Department of Art and Creative Media in Partnership with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Funded by Hispanic Serving Initiatives.

Gregg Deal (Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe) will speak about his artistic journey as a Native contemporary artist. His work challenges and critiques the ways in which the representation of Indigenous people in American society have been confined, controlled, and stereotyped. Through his work he creates unapologetic commentary on stereotypes, politics, history, and culture, exploring these conversations through sculpture, painting, installation, performance, murals, and more. His art is purposefully disruptive, seeking to shake ideas while also being a vessel for therapeutic self-healing and self-expression.

Gregg Deal has exhibited nationally and internationally, notably in the Denver Art Museum, and Smithsonian Institution. He has lectured extensively at museums and universities across the country. His appearances include televised specials on PBS’s The Art District, The Daily Show, and Totally Biased with Kamau Bell.

NEW: Conversations About White Dominant Culture and Self-Care: Balancing Self and Community Care in Higher Ed. Classrooms

On behalf of CTLL

What can you say about white culture? How can it be identified? What words would you use to describe white dominant culture characteristics? How do you personally interact with the characteristics of this culture? How have these dominant cultural characteristics impacted you?

When you ask white people about their culture, many times, they have no idea how to identify it. I am part of this culture and had that struggle for years. In the fall of 2022, I participated in an Anti-Racism for White Clinicians course. I was given materials that have helped me identify, define, notice, and evaluate these cultural characteristics that have influenced me most of my life. I have become passionate about having conversations about how the white-dominant culture influences self-care because I am passionate about helping people develop self-care coping skills and build their resilience capacity.

The characteristics shown to me in that learning group came from Kenneth Jones and Tema Okum’s work “Dismantling Racism: A Workbook for Social Change Groups.” I would love to share what I have learned as I evaluate these characteristics when I notice them showing up in my personal and professional life and see what you think and feel about them in your own life, personally and professionally.

Won’t you join me for some good exploratory conversation?
